Honda Division Posts Best May Ever
May sales supported by successful first full month of all-new Honda Fit

Posting robust sales of its best-selling Accord, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced May results of 141,810 Honda and Acura vehicle sales, marking an increase of 11.4 percent over May 2005. Lead by the seventh consecutive month of record-breaking sales of light trucks, American Honda posted record May truck sales of 56,912, up 5.0 percent. Year-to-date American Honda total vehicle sales of 614,778 are up 8.6 percent calculated by daily selling rate.

The Honda Division posted a record May for its fifth consecutive record month, with sales of 125,639 cars and light trucks, an increase of 16.6 percent over year-ago results. Civic sales of 29,006 reflect a 12.4 percent May increase and Accord sales increased 15.6 percent to 36,967. Record May Pilot sales of 12,856 reflect a 22.1 percent increase, helping the division post record May sales of 53,418 trucks, up 8.5 percent over year-ago results. The Ridgeline and CR-V also posted record May results, up 35.5 percent and 4.9 percent, respectively. The all-new Honda Fit sold 5,248 units in its first full month of sales. Honda also sold a total of 3,502 hybrid vehicles.

"Honda's compelling new Fit and Civic models are helping to drive customers into our dealers," said **************** Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda. "However, it's Honda's fuel economy leadership that is driving sales."

The Acura Division posted May sales of 16,171 with strong demand of 3,520 units for the TSX. The TL luxury performance sedan was Acura's best-selling model with May sales of 5,977 and year-to-date sales of 30,756.

Accord Hybrid down 62%, Insight barely on the sales map...

... while, interestingly, every Honda "truck" is up compared to last year. Aren't buyers supposed to be moving away from those?

I'm surprised Insight & S2000 sales are up!

It's sad when that age old CR-V is up and the Equinox tanked in May.

The Accord Hybrid is still too expensive and the Insight still isn't practical. The Ridgeline has slowly been building sales and the Pilot...well, that's news to me.

The Accord (without the hybrid combo) still hits a chord for family sedan buyers, even with the new Camry, brand-new Fusion, and face-lifted Malibu.

What are they going to do with Acura? Their "top-seller" is down 18%! Sheesh.

The same they did with the Accord, refresh it for 2007. Although it probably won't be as extensive as the Accord.

This is interesting, Honda posted a 16% increase while GM posted the exact opposite.

Tough times are ahead. A brand new car is not in the cards. My new (to me) 16 year old Accord serves the purpose extremely well. And it's paid off!

Secret is in winning those silly mag comparos.. "Informed people" buy into that hype.. you should see them driving down the road in their "consumer best buys"

It is ironic, but a 16% increase in Honda's sales figures is a much smaller absolute number than a 16% decrease in GM's sales figures, only because GM sells so many more vehicles than Honda does.

The market really seems to be taking to the Accord's mid-cycle update. Other than a few more horsepower and the new rear end, it's more or less the same car as the 2003-2005 models.

But the 'closing' rate is very fast. I did a little computation last night using the rates that Toyota sales are growing and GM sales are falling. It seems that Toyota will overtake GM in NA sales in '09 if current patterns continue. Of course this could change for the better or worse. For the better if GM car sales improve dramatically; not likely in my opinion. For the worse if sales of GM's big SUVs fall, or Delphi shuts down or GM files bankruptcy. Also, GM is much more at the effect of an energy shock due to political problems or a disaster either natural or human-caused.

I'm also surprised by the Accord numbers given the fact it is up against some strong, fresh competition. Ridgeline coming off a slow start is really picking up in the marketplace.

Interesting.

The Fit will help trounce the Aveo. Gas prices will help Honda. A CRV gives you better MPG's then a Theta with the same performace. No need for a boat anchor 3.4L V6. If Honda ever decides to start selling diesels like they do in Europe, GM's in big trouble.

Civic Hybrid sales are up by more than the Accord Hybrid's sales are down.
