uh, okay. the Cobalt was introduced in 2005, the Corolla in 2003. more importantly the Cobalt is all new on a new platform whereas the Corolla is more or less an update, albeit a rather extensive one. the fact that the Cobalt only outsold the Corolla by 10 units with a performance variant available is pretty sad IMO. i don't think that's worth cheering over.

not to mention having a coupe version, while the Corolla is sedan only when the Matrix is seperated from it.

If I understand your comment correctly, your basically downing GM because there are more dealerships that sell cobalts than their are Toyota dealerships selling corollas? You know people are desperate to defend foreign automakers when they start saying things such as this. So because more people own and operate chevy dealerships, that somehows translates that the cobalt really isn't doing better than the corolla? Last time I checked, it doesn't matter how many places sell something, if people don't want it they don't buy it.

3). I don't mean the Velite as-is from the Buick version. The interior materials are far to different. More using that Kappa platform for a $20k+ Chevy roadster. A properly styled and equipped Stingray could woo Gen Y buyers straight outta college. Then within the Chevrolet family you have the Corvette, Camaro, Stingray and hopefully a "heritage" inspired Zeta Impala. From that you can have the more "mundane" FWD products (Equinox, Malibu, HHR). I would then keep the Malibu as a FWD nicely styled "grocery-getter". With some constancy between the models as far as design cues. Twin tailights possibly. The Zeta Impala would be nicely styled performance, along the lines of Acura, Nissan. Yes, a nicely styled Zeta (no matter the badge) could diffinitely compete with Lexus, Nissan and Acura. I can easily see a consumer buying a $30,00 product over a $50,000 Lexus if they like the style.

The selling point of FWD is the higher gas mileage, and better snow manners. The materials would be more along the lines of the Solstice, rather than a Buick. I'm not sure you would want 4 cars with a similar mission (that is roadster). Then you get back to the issue of Solstice stealing Sky sales, stealing Stingray sales. 3 maybe, but not 4.

1 & 2). Then maybe the G6 could be targeted at the Camry/Accord. It is already FWD. And Pontiac is offering some nice variants of it (coupe, retractable hardtop). I guess the point I am trying to make is you need nicely styled FWD products as well.

that's a totally valid point. there are an awful lot of small Chevy dealers out there in the middle of nowhere where there isn't a Toyota dealership within a couple of hours. if there are more outlets for the Cobalt versus the Corolla that should absolutely translate to a few extra sales for the Cobalt just by default. some people can't or won't drive more than a few minutes for service on their vehicles, so in some cases their choices of cars are limited. i've been all over the state of Texas and even in the smallest of podunk towns there's usually a Chevrolet dealer, but you don't see Toyota dealerships there. there is no excuse for the Cobalt only selling 10 more units. the problem with the Cobalt is that it came to market already out of date. the Corolla is also out of date but it will be updated soon. how far out is the next Cobalt?

Point made is the Cobalt is equal to the Corolla in sales. The Cobalt will be due for a refresher here, maybe nicer interior materials. And sure the Corolla is due for an upgrade also.

But the point is made. Corolla and Cobalt sales is a dead-heat. The gap keeps getting smaller and smaller...
