Re: June 2008 Sales: Toyota - down 11.5% DSR

Their month to month (MAY 2008 TO JUNE 2008) is one of the lowest and they should christen the next Japanese Defense Force submarine JDF "LEXUS"

There were 24 selling days this month, compared to 27 selling days last June.

we could probably take care of your problem.

Seasonality is a given and doesn't have anything to do with this. ( of course it does, it's a seasonal industry )

Based on your very own comments, it should be one big sales increase after another after another after another.......( Helloooo seasonality )

You lied to us.
I am so disappointed.

( Children and little girls are easily disappointed like that too. )
I can't believe someone as smart and quick on the uptake as you are would still be stuck on this relatively minor point. It's almost too painful to have to try to explain such a simple concept to one who should understand it intuitively. I guess ya never know.

Re: June 2008 Sales: Toyota - down 11.5% DSR

3 people I work with are on Toyota Prius waiting lists for 6 months. These same 3 could not be convinced by me to check out a GM hybrid. The fuel economy numbers just aren't there in something like, say, the Malibu hybrid. I also told them about the compact car angle -- that if they only own the Prius for a few years, a Cobalt might not be so bad, and they countered with Resale Value...

Then I mentioned the Volt, and they asked, "How much and when?" That killed that discussion.

I want to help GM, but logic keeps getting in the way...

For all your pedantic arm-waving, you are again bereft of both knowledge and sensibility.

Seasonality has nothing to do with this.
Seasonality is a red herring for you to stand behind.
May versus May versus May versus May until the end of time;

What part about that marketing dynamic do you not understand?

Why wasn't May a record "May" sales month for Toyota?
Why wasn't June a record "June" sales month for Toyota?
Why did Toyota lose more marketshare than GM did?

Honestly, I try to bring some reasonable balance to these discussions,
but when you're cranky and hooked up on your Echo/Prius/Corolla fix,
you're sixty feet beyond the deep-end with your Toyota fauning.

Here, maybe this will placate your need for a fix.

To keep your grandstanding to a minimum let's bring this back on target.

OP asked a question about Corolla's in post#6 'Why were Corolla's down 10K units in June?'
I replied about Corolla's in post #11, that was the end of it. This was a mini-aside to the general subject here.

In post #23 you hopped in taking exception to the seasonality issue, which is ludicrous btw.

I never said anything about general sales or general records or any such thing, that's you're imagination or invention. Toyota is a maker of BOF vehicles, it's BOF vehicles are being beaten down in the market like all BOF vehicles are. Nothing surprising here. The NA market is making a massive change in it's buying preferences. Those that don't have BOF vehicles are up generally those that do are down.

June sales..GM smokes Toyota
From Allpar

"Toyota, arguably the world's largest automaker, reported a fall of 11.5% from June 2007 to June 2008 in U.S. sales, adjusted for daily selling rate. While Toyota only fell 10%, due to a slide in truck sales (Tundra fell 34%, FJ Cruiser 50%, 4Runner 40%, RAV4 13%, Sienna 9%), Lexus dropped 20% compared with last June, with trucks falling less than cars. Toyota car sales actually rose 4.4%, led by the Corolla, setting records with a 30% gain and sales of 42,180 cars for the month. Camry was around even with last year, and Yaris edged up 4%. Scion's tC lost 25% of its sales, year to year, while the xB rose 41% (the xA, which sold just 1,300 units in June 2007, was dropped).

GM reported a sales drop of 18.5% from June 2007, with Hummer dropping 59% but the Cobalt rising 22% and Malibu shooting up 73%. The full size vans and crossovers, including the Enclave and Acadia, boomed in sales. (GM does not adjust for the number of sales days.)

Ford sales fell far more, falling 28% with the F-series trucks falling 40%, and Explorers selling roughly half of last June's level. However, the Focus rose 53% in retail (fleet sales dropped as planned), and the company is busily converting truck assembly lines to build its smaller cars.

Honda reported an 11% gain despite lower truck and minivan sales. Honda cleared 142,539 units in June, while GM sold 265,937, Ford sold 174,091 and Toyota sold 193,234 vehicles in the U.S."

Notice the push on the internet.....to use the seasonality 'presentation'.

Gee, I so stupidly ask, why haven't we heard this before ?

Well, of course, the real answer is that in a 'high' season month - bringing this into the presentation could diminish strong, positive numbers and magnify weak performance numbers - with Toyota its always the appearance of the accomplishment.

So, then there are the 'low' seasonal months past to consider - still the same answer - plus, they didn't need it before to minimize anything like the surprising relative weakness of this month.

Notice, that even just last month, seasonal adjusted was not discussed - oh, that's right, that's part of what you've been saying.

Don't get all sensitive now;
And where in my post did you see the words "general"?
Seeing you try to mince and deconstruct sentences is so very putrid.

We're just advocating rational balance
instead of obsequious Toyota fauning.
Is that too much to ask?

No joke plane, I wish I could turn a phrase or post like that !

Anyway, the next thing that'll happen is people will start using seasonal adjusted for Toyota ('best' looking), and, non seasonally or dsr adjusted for GM ie the 'worst' looking.

"A Clue's" linked post that I put up does something similar - uses dsr adjusted for Toyota and non adjusted for GM.

Sometimes the spin is rather craven in charactor.

YEP.

This is just part of the story - your comments basically apply to Toyota's ever increasingly larger 'slow down' on a month to month basis for 2008.

Breath taking when compared to even just the industry averages and other numbers that are appropriate - I'll get that in a minute.

One of those 'yardstick' numbers is the overall entire industry number which was;

+ 11.9% APRIL - MAY 2008

- 14.9% MAY - JUNE 2008.

Look at both the numbers and percentages.
