The people that cart around six kids and a boat large enough to demand a Suburban will probably be less affected by fuel pricing than someone who commutes to work in a Tahoe. The total percentage of sales is much smaller, but the market these vehicles serves is far more insulated from fuel costs.

Exactly. Suburbans and Yukon XLs are typically less of an image purchase than a Tahoe. Plus, Prius sales were well up. Gas prices do matter.

Does leasing count? I couldn't wait for the ASTRA so I leased a FOCUS for my wife.

Re: GM Sales UP In August !!

While I certainly did not feel an upswing of sales myself, this is certainly good news. Maybe now people will stop waiting for the "big" sale.

There sure have been a lot of ads for deals on the Silverado and Sierra recently, and those two models (plus the known fleet queens) were the ones that had sales increases.

Still, it's quite rare that there's a month where GM is up and Toyota is down.

Not just the minivan market. They also ran from the mini truck market - which one can arguable say is how Toyota and Nissan got into the truck business at all.

Until the Aveo, GM has run from the subcompact car market as well. The fact that GM seems to be not abandoning the Cobalt (according to recent info) shows they might just stick around for the compact party.

Re: GM Sales UP In August !!

A nice change to see GM do better with Toyota lose sales. Would be nice if it actually would turn into a trend. It is too bad it's on the truck side, though the CUVs doing well is great.

True, but pretty much everybody ran from the subcompact market, except Hyundai/Kia. When the Aveo was released, the only other subcompacts were the extremely slow-selling Toyota Echo, the Mini Cooper, the Scion xA, the Kia Rio, and the Hyundai Accent. The Japanese big three (Nissan/Honda/Toyota) didn't release the Versa, Fit, and Yaris respectively until after the Aveo had already been out a year or two.

Re: GM Sales UP In August !!

so to clarify, GM's entire division sold 385,000 vehicles and Toyota's entire division sold only 233,000 vehicles... or is that just Toyota and not Lexus or anything. I must be missing something because when I look at these numbers it looks like GM is destroying Toyota.. Thanks, Matt

Good news, but it all looks like a fleet driven sales increase to me.

One of those Sierra's was mine, ext cab SLT, black with black leather, oval step bar and A.R.E. SLII Tonneau cover, loaded, and a fine machine. A real head turner, countless numbers of people have walked up and told me, "man you have got one fine truck", it puts a big Ole smile on my face, cause I KNOW IT!!!!!!!!!!
