Re: GM May Sales Down 16%

I don't want to see these percentages of the months this year that they had the employee discount last year...the numbers are gonna look BAD!

The GMT-900 SUVs are doing great! How about that Escalade?? Up 50%! The Corvette sales increase is probably only because they are making as many as they can sell. The stat about the Sky lasting 2 days on dealer lots is incredible as well.

When you look at the detail of the numbers, LaCrosse isn't looking too great (-26%), nor is STS (-38%), XLR (-27%), Malibu (-40%), Grand Prix (-33%), Vibe (-26%), Colorado (-26%), Canyon (-35%), H2 (-37%), or Relay (-67%).

They tout how well the "launch vehicles" have done - well, this should be a lesson to them. If they built all of their cars as attractive and desirable as the HHR, Solstice, Sky, H3, Tahoe, Suburban, Escalade, and Yukon, maybe we wouldn't have to suffer through sales results like this. Next month is going to get really ugly when they have to compare to the Employee Pricing for Everyone sales from last year. Sales were up 40% last year in the beginning of that promotion - they'll probably be down more than that
margin this year.
true but a reduction on fleets you have to consider. that sucks quite frankly how much those important vehicles are down. all products need to be segment leading, not "good enough" like sooo many are.

GM execs also figured out that people who buy full-size SUVs don't care too much about gas prices, but made their offering best-in-class in case they did. They're raking in the bucks now as everyone falters in one of the, if not THE most lucrative segment in the car industry. Admittedly, they are quite slow on the small car side.

Very true. But how long before products falter there too?

Tough times are ahead. A brand new car is not in the cards. My new (to me) 16 year old Accord serves the purpose extremely well. And it's paid off!

Well, that's not going to happen for at least a couple of years since few new full-size SUVs are coming down the pike. Unless there's a recall of massive proportions, there isn't anything that immediately comes to mind that would knock them off their pedestal. They will have 60, maybe 70% share for a good long while. Truck-wise (since they are the three-biggest sellers in the USA) they have a solid second place entry in the Silverado, way ahead of the RAM. If their reviews are as glowing as the SUVs' were, then they are headed for good times there, as well. Fine and good. HOWEVER, if they want to step out of their current image as the "big, bad American giant that sells only SUVs", they have to make the Aveo, Cobalt, and Malibu register on the radar of the media. The HHR is a sensation, but everything else at this price point floats around in anonymity. Mileage for the smallest ones are near the bottom of the class, while Honda and Toyota sit at the top. That's why they still have the "green" image.

Re: GM May Sales Down 16%

For every new Toyota or Honda convert, is one less former GM/Ford/DCX customer. Every month for the past several months Toyo and Honda increase their sales over the previous time period in '05. Those for the most part are customers that the Big 3 will never see again. Detroit is on a one-way trip down the slipperly slope. And they have no one to blame except themselves.

GM and Ford are no longer "just truck and SUV" companies. They are now "just LARGE truck and SUV" companies. The small truck and SUV markets are now dominated by Honda and Toyota, just like the car markets. This, of course, is a bad spot to be in with gas costing three bucks or more.

And the GMT-900s AREN'T doing spectacular. People buying these are somewhat sensitive to gasoline prices-except those who can afford an Escalade.

Escalade is up 49.8%, but the Tahoe is down 5.5% and the Yukon is down 4.1%. Those are NOT good numbers.

Re: GM May Sales Down 16%

So, the NEW Avalanche 900 platform sold 1,600+

Plus 1,800+ of the 800 existing platform

='s ~ 3,336 in May. Nice initial partial month rebound.

By September (ish) the 6.0L and Z71 models should be available. We'll see what it's capable of by the end of the year.

I'm sure the new FJ Cruiser is hurting 4Runner and Highlander sales. When combined with the 97% increase in sales of the RAV4 due to it's redesign, Toyota branded SUVs were up 31% overall.

Big gainers for Toyota (>10%):

Yaris (new)
Corolla up 28.0%
Scion xA up 71.3%
Scion xB up 41.4%
Scion tC up 10.6%
Lexus ES Series up 52.2%
Lexus IS Series up 928.1% (not a typo)
RAV4 up 97.0%
FJ Cruiser (new)
And the beat goes on at Toyota....

Yeah, let's go by units and not percentages. I always hated math in school anyway.

I meant the raw percentages, not adjusted for selling days.

Thank you for the numbers, it shows GM moving as expected to after the introduction of the Impala and the New Buicks . This should stop some of the guessing.
