How much is Toyota getting press about the almost 50% drop in Tundra sales? They are right in line with the rest of the industry in sales...
Perhaps, but to believe that Toyota's being down and GM's being down are synonymous events is not at all accurate. The management of that downturn is very much different. Toyota, Honda and Nissare all are compensating with other models in a very significant way; looking at the top ten sellers in the country readily demonstrates that. Looking at the plans for Toyota's more flexible plants versus GM's old "tried-and-true" plan of just closing plants and handing out pink slips is evidence of that. And the fact that Toyota's turning in black ink, Honda just posted a record quarterly profit, whereas GM continues with the red ink river, is further evidence of that.

You forgot the basic rule ... the cars and engines we really need are always 2 years away.

people thought me to be a fruitcake and disloyal years ago when I called for Wagoner's removal, nuts when I claimed they were going to sell GMAC, and crazy when I predicted $10 Billion loss when GMS for everyone was announced. being ahead of the curve can be a lonely place.
Well, the majority of what you "predicted" wouldn't have come to frutation had gas prices not soared in such a relatively short amount of time. GM main loss is coming from suv's and trucks tanking. I guess anyone can claim gas prices will go up at some point in the future but you can't seriously think you actually knew how and why GM would be posting such great losses in July of 2008.

Wow, how the hell did Nissan 'outperform' Honda ?

Here is a quick point...I don't want to look up the real numbers:

When you sell a gazillion last year on the same month, it is much harder to sell another gazillion when economies are down. (Honda)

However, when you only sell 10 last year on the same month, it is much easier to sell 11 when the economies are down. (Nissan)

While no one predicted oil going to $140, signs of increasing gas had been seen for a long time as the US economy slowed and the dollar dropped. There were numerous stories about it on the internet, however the main media and gov't never mentioned it until recently (remember Bush was unaware of $4 gas?).

GM, Ford and Chrysler counted on sales of trucks and SUVs to remain profitable. That's putting all of your eggs in one basket. Any slip in that market would spell disaster for the company.

Oil hitting $140 just accelerated the bleeding. Even if oil stayed at $100 to $110, with the slowdown in the economy, people would have eventually traded in their 16MPG truck for a 25MPG car.

And like the Camaro may be too little too late, We have been waiting for it for ages and now gas prices may squash it's helping hand.

It takes 5 years in this business, my mentor told me. What you do today won't show it's benifits for 5 years from now.

Can GM and Ford survive for 5 years, while waiting to build "Profitable, fuel effiencent cars?"
