Re: GM Hangs on to #1 Sales Spot; Holds off Toyota

Good news for GM! Sounds like they earned a reprieve for now. I am also surprised to see that Saturns have sold better as compared to last year. They may just earn themselves a reprieve.

What do you know? Toyota dropped more then GM, to under 200k! So June wasn't so bad after all. I was hoping May was just an really awful month, and it looks like that's the case. Excellent news!

Re: GM Hangs on to #1 Sales Spot; Holds off Toyota

GM still has a lot of work ahead for it. A Smaller entry level Saab Below 9-3, a new 9-3. A Smaller better Pontiac below their G5. A new cobalt, a replacement for both G6 and Aura as soon as possible, a new Aveo, new cobalt, a smaller Buick below the La Crosse, a replacement for the Lucerne, a new Cadillac below CTS, one above STS, an upgrade for the Corolado/Canyon twins...
New Chevy sedans... and something to replace the equinox...
and much much more
A wider use of its two mode 4 banger hybrid, especially with the G6/Malibu/Aura/La Crosse, should be here before the end of the year, if they want any help in that area.

I concur, but GM needs to finally kill its old vehicles like the Envoy/Lucerne and add better small cars. Then they will be set.

I agree. GM can only do it one step at a time, though. And a lot of what you mentioned is definitely well into the pipeline.

Most people don't realize that Lexus is very heavy on the SUV's.

Once, back when Lincoln had the Navigator / Aviator (and was of course considered reliant on SUV sales) I looked up the two companies' car vs. SUV sales.

To my surprise, Lexus was selling a higher percentage of SUV's than Lincoln was.

Not much has changed since, so it's no shock to me that Lexus sales have collapsed.

True, if you count the RX series as a SUV.

The rot in the car lines is at this point just a bad.

Can't wait for Lexus European numbers - megscuro will have to start a 'Time to drop Lexus' thread or lose what little credibility he might have left.

But there won't be any 'blasting' of Toyota because it's not life-threatening the way it is with Chrysler and maybe Ford. Being caught unawares at Toyota results in a reduction in profit not being chopped up ( Chrysler ) or ending up in BK court ( Ford ). There's a significant difference.
spare me the excuses. The average Joe could care less about Ford going bankrupt or how much profit Toyota makes. The press isnt making a big deal about it because they have been telling us for years that Toyota gets its product mix right and Detroit is piloted by idiots who want to force gas guzzlers on us. As I said, most in the media are explaining away GM's holding of the #1 position by saying its due to rampant discounting which is a lie. At this point Toyota is probably more important to the US economy than Chrysler so this crap about "they only make a big deal out of Big 3 failures because they are so important" needs to stop. Another thing, Toyotas problems are bigger than the Tundra. Lexus, the Avalon, Scion and the Highlander arent doing well. Also, Tahoe sales were slightly up last month so its not as simple as saying all BOF vehicles are doing poorly and everything else is OK.

why does the Aura need to be replaced as soon as possible if sales are increasing? Only on GMI to people demand the immediate replacement of vehicles that are gaining traction in the marketplace. Just because people here say the Aura is a failure doesnt make it so. The Astra is a failure so far, but the Aura is not. Saturn should sell over 80k this year which is better than cars like the Mazda 6 or Milan. Not bad for the 3rd best selling epsilon that has virtually no ad budget.
