Re: GM Daewoo's April sales up 31%
More good news from GMDAT! I hope this continues for a long time; I can't see why it won't. They have a LOT of growing room.

Sadly, my 1978 Pinto was far more reliable and economical and parts were dirt-cheap. Not so for GMDAT -- think Cadillac or Mercedes pricing for parts for a $10K "economy" car. Ask me -- I know! ![]() |

It's unfortunate that you had to have a terrible experience with the Aveo. Really no one's here to blame except GM. Yes, it's a GMDAT product but GM shouldn't be marketing it under it's NA brands if it's not up to par. I'd like to know (other than the low mpg and overpriced parts) what problems did you have with it? Your post makes me fear GMDAT products even more, I dunno if your case is an exception or is the norm, I didn't read or hear about a lot of people complaining about it.

Engine stumbled for the first time, check engine light came on and I was stuck on the side of the road. Dead catalytic converter which sent debris into the muffler, destroying it. Parts were $1100 with no aftermarket alternatives -- total repair and rental for 4 days came to $1650. Many have damaged or broken timing belts well before 60K mile interval along with bent valves. Supposedly, GM has a TSB about replacing belts at 30K -- seems they know this engine (like Daewoos before it) have a propensity for premature timing belt failure. I plan to change every 50K with the obligatory water pump every 2nd replacement. My belt went south at 38K miles. Add this up over the lifetime of a vehicle compared to models with timing chains and the Aveo's low purchase price is less of a bargain. I've owned or driven quite a few cars since my first in 1970 -- this car has the highest maintenance costs of any, and it's supposed to be an economy car! A co-worker bought 2 new Echos in 2000 and 2003 and put on 520K between the two with only spark plugs and a set of brake pads for each. She bought a Scion xB last year and has 85K trouble-free miles so far. Toyota/Scions cost more than the Aveo, but I've learned that for the long haul, this inexpensive car cost just as much or more than the cars I thought I couldn't afford.
