Yes and Ford can learn how to design cars from GM!

The term is "Rocket Scientist" actually, not "Rocked Scientist".

Guess you aren't in that category.

Well done, Ford. Hope to see many more.

Perhaps he meant 'stoned' scientist. We could always use more of those since most of the ones from the 60's invented most everything technological that we use today. Is is just me or does he 'sound' like a Russian villain from a bad 80's Cold War movie?

BTW, is that Alan Tudyk in your avatar?

All right Ford! I don't understand how they are making money though, and GM is not. GM has had better product and better sales than Ford. What's going on?

Re: Ford: $100 million Q1 profit

Uh...none of it says that its 100 mill came from North America, it came from Europe and South Africa as the two high lights.
European Ford is doing very well...much like how European GM is doing very well.
Its the turn around in America that has GM out in front, and Ford looking from behind.

Quote:
Ford Motor Co. surprised Wall Street on Thursday with a $100 million profit in the first quarter as strong results from Europe and South America helped offset the impact of a slumping U.S. economy that cut car and truck sales in its main market. Its shares rose almost 5 percent in premarket trading.

What was GM's NA result? ( or will be - they announce tomorrow right?) - Ford NA lost 600mill LAST YEAR and only 50mill THIS YEAR - the cut $550mill of loss from North America amid slumping US economy - that is not a bad result.

Ford has been saying this since 2006 - their goal it to post NA and overall profit in 2009. They are on track to reach that.

What he said. Especially the last sentence.

There's a huge difference between FACTS and CRITICISM. VCDJ is no where near the FACT side of the spectrum.

Thank you for posting that Igor (I was going to). BigAl is kind of the P71 of the GM forums. LOL............ especially when it comes to Ford.

As for the question that someone had about GM being slower............. of course they will be, they are a much larger company. At some point, I think that GM will have to agree that smaller would be better. It is obvious that they do not have the money to support all of their brands, and all of the products.

Yes, GM has made some great products lately. The problem is that they have a bunch of stale ho hum ones still waiting to get redone. This is what happens when you have too many brands and products............ and not enough money. Due to their size, it will be much easier for Ford to right the ship............... even though they started later. It helps that Bill Ford (who everyone loves to hate) did actually start to fix the company from the inside (which nobody saw)............. which led the way to the improved processes and quality that you see today. In other words, he started to build the foundation of the turnaround.

I root for both companies evenly. GM has done better with some product, and Ford has done better with processes. Hopefully they have both done/are doing enough.

What about the upcoming Fusions with EcoBoost? Aren't they saying they will get 30 mpg in the city?

The new product like Edge, Fusion, Focus, Escape have played role, but not a major one yet ....

Igor

and soon add to the addition, the Flex and on overseas markets, the new Fiesta and the next-gen Ka.

I think then Mullaly do a good job for Ford and I think then Toyota and Honda could begin to check some nervous rear-view mirror checks. I think then Ford might have some additionnal hidden aces we didn't suspect.

Regarding your question about the information including the sale of Jaguar & Land Rover, the article says "The results do not include Jaguar and Land Rover, which Ford has agreed to sell to India's Tata Motors Ltd." which sounds like it doesn't include money made/lost by them nor the sale proceeds.

Ford will make more money off the parts such as engines and engineering services than they will from the actual sale.

The big plus for Ford though will be getting about 20,000 super expensive British employees and their facilities/plants off the payroll.

Don't forget the redesigned MKS, 09 F150, Fusion/Milan/MKZ, new Taurus/Sable? and the real game changer Transit-Connect (CRD diesel please!) that will start to dominate small businesses, light construction and taxi service.

Now as for areas to work on:
Accelerate the Explorer/Sport Trac transition to unibody.

Make the Ranger replacement a smaller truck along the lines of the old Courier/Luv. Then take what is now the Ranger and make it bigger with a crew cab to compete with tacoma/frontier and call it an F100. F100 will do several things for Ford by bringing back an old name and by boosting the sales of the F-series (F-100 - F450).

Seriously consider bringing over more Euro-Fords as either Fords or Mercurys (Modeo obviously, S-Max, Ka/Street Ka and Galaxy Van would all do well).

Combine next gen E-Series and Transit...I lean towards the Transit architecture based on less weight and higher MPGs.

DSG, diesels...more is better.

GMAC is seriously cramping GM's style right now. And the way GM negoitiated its' uaw contract is turning out to be a nightmare. Ford just negotiated 20% second tier workers and not job positions. Delphi won't go away either. As for American Axle...wrong time, wrong place, right inventory levels.

BTW we still have a combative caw contract to renegotiate this year...Yikes!

Things will look up for GM in 2009 after all the buyouts, mortgage recovery and strikes are over with.

Re: Ford: $100 million Q1 profit

Way to go Ford! Great progress is being made. It's good to see things turning around, without even a great product mix right now. I guess a lot of it is due to Alan Mullally's cost cutting? He was definitely the kind of CEO Ford needed right now.
