IMO, this is a valid point. While GM shows it can build great cars with leading gas mileage it is a disadvantage to not have these specs modelwide.

I'm not commenting on the Cobalt/Focus issue, but think the situation with the Malibu is not good business. Most consumers will not want to forced into the top end model for fuel economy benefits. Hopefully the six speed automatic (which seems to be the difference) will become modelwide.

In a lot of ways GM (like Ford and Chrysler) manipulate what customers buy. i.e It is often a lot harder to find a Hybrid on the lot, and dealers want prices closer to MSRP to get one. It is bad business because customers are angered (and lost) by these practices.
I agree with you. But when you point out these things to gm fan boys they will tell you that you are stupid and that you do not know what you are talking about. Just look what kind of response i get here for pointing out facts.

Wait...does this count the fact that Ford got billions for Jag/LR? Since the deal went through last month...I think it would.

The 6spd auto is available from LT to LTZ. Its only not available in the LS model, which is the lowest model trim.
So to clear it up...the 6 speed auto is available for the 2.4 in the LT as well as the LTZ. Is STANDARD in the LTZ, but optional for the LT, so you CAN enjoy the 2.4/6 combo at a lower price.

The deal did NOT go through yet - it was approved and signed, but the money has not been exchanged - that will happen in Q2 ..

so NO this does not include the sale of JLR, and in turn we should expect about 3bn profit in Q2 which is usually Ford's best quarter of the year (with Q4 being the worst)

Thanks for the clarification on this. Good news.

Regarding your question about the information including the sale of Jaguar & Land Rover, the article says "The results do not include Jaguar and Land Rover, which Ford has agreed to sell to India's Tata Motors Ltd." which sounds like it doesn't include money made/lost by them nor the sale proceeds.

The 2008 operating data discussed herein exclude Jaguar and Land Rover because it is held for sale. Jaguar Land Rover and Aston Martin data are, however, included in the 2007 data, except where otherwise noted. See tables following “Safe Harbor/Risk Factors” for the amounts attributable to Jaguar Land Rover and any necessary reconciliations to U.S. GAAP.

Re: Ford: $100 million Q1 profit

I think this could be really bad news for GM (now listen before you start complaining). Ford has has a lot of good things said lately (quality, turn around, etc) and now this profit. GM hasn't had much good said in a while (Q1 Toyota takes sales lead, etc). If GM doesn't post a profit, I look for the media to push this fact heavily. They won't say "look how good Ford's doing, GM's attempt's aren't as successfull", it'll come out more "GM looses more money despite the fact that even Ford has turned a profit".

Also this will put Ford up a rung on the ladder to where the media won't keep harping on them (they won't praise them either), but will leave GM to be the sole whipping boy in the US media.

that is correct - the product mix between today and December 2006 when they posted the 12bn loss is not that much different - this is all due to cost reductions, and better inventory management.

The new product like Edge, Fusion, Focus, Escape have played role, but not a major one yet ....

When does the Fiesta go on sale? I suspect that will be a big seller for Ford.

Facts? What facts have you posted? Your posts are full of assinine comments with no facts and no bearing on the real world. You joined a GM fan site and can do nothing, NOTHING, but b!tc# about it all the time. There is a difference between a fan and a fanboy. A fan will give constructive criticism, a fanboy will deny any problems exist. You needn't post constant, inane drivel that you obviously know nothing about nor care to research. Your opinions are NOT facts. You DON'T know what you are talking about and your comments make you appear stupid...what's so wrong with pointing that out?
