AutoNews: GM Says Asia Sales Up 15%

GM says 2007 Asia vehicle sales up 15%

Automotive News | January 11, 2008 - 3:05 am EST

SHANGHAI (Reuters) -- General Motors said today its vehicle sales in Asia Pacific grew 15.1 percent in 2007, helped largely by strong demand in mainland China.

GM sold a record 1.44 million vehicles in Asia, boosting its market share in the region to an estimated 6.9 percent, up from 6.5 percent in 2006, it said in a statement.

Sales in China rose 18.5 percent to a record 1.03 million vehicles during the period.

In Korea, domestic sales of GM and GM Daewoo products hit an all-time high of 131,040 units, while exports of vehicles by GM Daewoo rose to more than 820,000 units, it said, without providing comparative figures.

Sales in India came to 60,032 units in 2007, up 73.7 percent. Sales in Australia amounted to 148,813 units, it added. No comparative figures were given.

General Motors, which competes with the likes of Volkswagen AG in the region, did not give a sales forecast for 2008, but Nick Reilly, GM Asia Pacific president, said his company would continue to launch new models and expand capacity.

From this article, it seems that GM has the first part of a winning strategy in place in Asia: pro-growth, pro-profit. Absolutely nothing wrong with that!

That's because you have to go to an American government run school to learn to hate America.

Aside from large pick up trucks and SUV's (GMT-900) , GM makes a substantial amount of it's profit from Asia especially China. GM is also very highly regarded there because aside from selling high quality cars, they donate money to automotive engineering and design programs in universities in China and share their latest technology in the Chinese auto industry. It almost seems GM's Asia operations are a separate company from the North American operations.

The whole thing about sharing their latest technology with the their Chinese partners worries me greatly. Let's remember, even though the Chinese fund our national debt, they are NOT really our friends. GM's relationship with SAIC should be a tentative one, at most.

But it's vital GM does not become complacent. Arguably, that is the cause of their failings in NA and, although they now appear to be recovering, in Europe.

I have always thought this - I think SAIC is gleaming the knowledge base but will drop GM (and VW) once they feel confident enough to go it alone.
