Now that Muller is insisting on the "92" naming, I believe he is deliberately leaving out the 91 for a smaller vehicle. I expect that after all the smoke and mirrors dissipate, we will simply see a 9-3 3-door hatch with a teardrop-shaped rear end (too bad for you, rear-seat passengers, Saab and Opel hate you).
I am still keeping fingers crossed for a really mini mini-sized Saab 9-1. Perhaps going back to the Fiat connection and borrowing the Fiat 500 platform along with the two-cylinder would be the perfect solution to bring back the 92-96 spirit. The only question is whether Fiat would see it as stepping on the toes of its own small premium offerings.
According to Car & Driver magazine in there current issue(July 2010), The article w/in the magazine says that Saab will have a new 92 model(as we know from this thread) as well as a new 900 model in its future line up.
My hope for the next gen 9-3 is that aside from the sedan, that they have a 2dr model that looks similar to the sedan along w/a 2dr or 4dr hatchback & a 2dr convertible.
I like the current 9-3, but wish the sedan had a 2dr hard top variant.

If it's a Toyota/Lexus/Scion, Don't ride in/drive it!!
