Oldsmobile 98 reliability??

How relaible is a 1994 Oldsmobile 88 Royale? I believe it has the 3.8L and it has no rust. It has 170,000 kms and is about $2000 as is or so in the GTA.

Re: Oldsmobile 98 reliability??

Excellent...

Many of those go to 300K miles with normal upkeep...

Re: Oldsmobile 98 reliability??

anything with the 3800 is rock solid reliable!! One of the most reliable engines out IMO. even if something breaks down, parts are easy & cheap to get!

Yup, great drivetrain. Reletivly simple, cheap, efficient, and not slow by any means

Re: Oldsmobile 98 reliability??

I bought a buick regal which is its twin. Its a 91 supercharged and with 90,000 miles on it and has been rock solid. Seem to have a mild alignment problem but I think thats cause of driver abuse. My dads and later my oldsmobile 88 had 318,000 miles on it before we got rid of it. Parts are cheap and the common things that went wrong with it are : Alternators, belts (If they start squeeling change them immediatly), oxygen sensors, and a water pump at 280,000 miles. I would say go for it man I love my buick

The Regal wasn't related to the 88 or 98--that was the Park Avenue.
The Regal was related to the Cutlass Supreme (and then Intrigue).

I thought Buick didn't produce supercharged Regals until the 2nd-gen W-body? (1997.5)

Re: Oldsmobile 98 reliability??

Um i'm not a hundred percent sure it could be an engine swap. But, somehow I doubt it because its still a series I.

EDIT: Yeah I looked it up it isnt the same engine that came from the factory. It is a grandsport but the engine has to be a transplant. It came with the n/a 170 horsepower 225 ft pound 3.8. I bought it on a whim for 1200$ I didn't really research it any. Just saw 3.8 big old gm car and thought it would take me where I needed to go without much fuss for a couple years... Like my dads and step sisters and my brothers ect ... Six months later im happy to own it Although the rear disks are squeeling really bad and need replacing. I bought it from an old guy who didn't know much about cars, or what had been done to it in the past. I was very skeptical about the mileage, and wouldn't have believed it except there was absolutly no rust. For a 15 almost 16 year old car thats quite the feat.

I'd say its definitly worth it. I know the cars get alot of hate, but they really are nice solid cars. If I buy a used car next which I may do It will probably be a 2000+ lesabre or lacross. By 08 they should be going pretty cheap

Re: Oldsmobile 98 reliability??

Great car! The interiors are pretty fragile and the exterior trim requires care but if taken care of the car will last a looong time.

Re: Oldsmobile 98 reliability??

Solid buy. Some friends of mine had a the Buick cousin of the Olds 98 that was very dependable with over 145,000 miles. The 3.8L has good low end muscle, decent mileage, and should burn little if any oil. The good thing about the olds 98 is that most origional owners seem to be the type that takes care of their cars.

The 3.8L has a good following. Parts are available if you need them.

Does the car have power windows, locks, etc? You might have to worry about those.

My aunt had a Olds 88 which is almost identical and she has 212000 miles on it. Still running.
