Hemmings find of the day: 1970 Oldsmobile Toronado GT

    From Hemmings blog
    http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2...toronado-gt-2/
When I check the '70 Toronado front end and the customized version made by George Barris for the 1st season of Mannix
http://www.showrods.com/showrod_pages/mannix.html I wondered if the designers was inspired by Mannix's car?

Stephane Dumas, you do some very special stuff here, thank you. I had '66 & '74 Toros back in the day, still have the '66 motor. Awesome rides, those big block fwds. '70 GTs are rare & they're supposed to have steel cranks, most 455s are nodular cast. Many GTs gave up their cranks to hotrodders. '68 & '72 were great years for Toro too, these 5 years being my favorites.

Definitely a great ride! The Toronados had a loyal following and exuded highly stylish sportiness! Some may even place this model as the high-point for Oldsmobile.

That's a very nice piece of well preserved automobile history. Thanks for posting!

Wow, I forgot about the Toronado GT. I didn't realize the W34 had that type of semi-ram air type of air cleaner assembly. I always thought the Toronado GT came with this type of closed air cleaner assembly, just like this W34 1970 Toronado GT:

I loved the way the the 1970 Toronado GT had the inserts cut out of the lower rear bumper for the dual exhausts just like the 442s of the same era:

Nice car. I wonder how many of these Toronados surprised some traditional "super" cars of the '60s and '70s at the stop lights?

    1971 Buick Riviera (Buick 455)
    1971 Buick Electra 225 (Buick 455)

Without Buick, GM never would have existed.

Re: Hemmings find of the day: 1970 Oldsmobile Toronado GT

Everybody thinks of fwd as a nail in GM's coffin but the early toro & eldo were never duplicated again, they were unique. Almost 5000 lbs is alot of weight to overcome but they were in the height of the factory muscle era so power was easy, just brakes & corners to worry about. They set the center of gravity low in the front end & it'd surprise you what it does, bit of a learning curve in there. (I think stock) 66 toro set record to pike's peak it's intro year, get the right driver... Then the unexpected surprise, all that weight over the front wheels, in 4 inches of snow it'd beat 4wd trucks out of the hole, olds had better power to weight & the fwd planted it like it was raining or something.
If you've never driven one & you get a chance to in a decent example, do it, chances are you'll get out surprised, broadened.

That's about the best looking Toronado. Too bad for them that Buick got the best wheels though (those on Toro's look barf in my mouth a little bit-awful)
