Does anyone remember the Chevrolet Celebrity VR?

I totally forgot about them, infact never have I seen one in person, only in magazines back in the 80's.

Oh yeah...I remember them. There were one or two around back in the day. I liked them...but the Pontiac 6000STE was the A-body to have!

Ha, thanks for that clip man! Love that car! I didn't realise it was an outside company that did the VR treatment, or that you could get it on the wagon too.

This car gets mentioned about one every year it seems... though I just posted a picture a few weeks ago! Twice this year! Whohoo! Long live the VR!

I'm with Hudson. The STE was better all around and didn't scream out for attention like the VR did.

I wish Pontiac had made an STE wagon.

I did not know it was a third party, or a wagon was avail either? Crazy!

The STE AWD was a nice one too!

Re: Does anyone remember the Chevrolet Celebrity VR?

I remember the VR, someone at the far end of the street in my old neighborhood had one, I always thought they looked a little cheesy, but they are rare.

Or you could look for the also obscure 1986 Buick Century Grand Sport, which was an all blacked out Centruy Custom coupe with the 3.8 litre V6 in it and a tire and suspension upgrade, kind of like a Century Grand National, but without the turbo of course.

Or maybe one of the rare FWD A-body convertibles that were made, they were after market, but they look factory and are really nice, they are probably the only collectible A-body with the possible exception of the STE, they mostly were Cutlass Cieras, but I have seen a few Centurys too, I have never seen a Celebrity or 6000 convertible.

The STE's were really awsome too, they were pricey when new, almost the same price as a RWD G body Bonneville or Parisenne, the later ones were the best, when they had the full digital dash and the steering wheel radio controls. They also had a compressor in the trunk like the later SSE Bonnevilles.

Any Diesel engined or manual transmissioned FWD A body is pretty rare too, there currently is or was a diesel engined 1985 Buick Century Limited on ebay.

The FWD A bodies are kind starting to get a little interesting, but not nearing any collector status yet, they kind of represent everything that was right and wrong with GM at the time, they were all available with sporty models, i.e Eurosport, STE, ESS and T-Type, all available with base 4 cylinder cheapo models, all available with a wood sided wagon, Celebrity Estate, 6000 Safari, Ciera Cutlass Cruiser and Century Estate Wagon, all available with the full "whites and wires" dressed up versions, it was kind of schizophrenic.

Re: Does anyone remember the Chevrolet Celebrity VR?

The producers of that video were...bold. I could never hope to come up with that much hyperbole for a Celebrity.

Re: Does anyone remember the Chevrolet Celebrity VR?

Were the A-bodies at all related to the N-bodies?

Re: Does anyone remember the Chevrolet Celebrity VR?

Not really. The A was closely related to the X. I think the N might share more with the J.

The AWD was to delicate and had too many AWD specific parts for me.

One good thing about the A is that the supercharged 3.8 bolts right in.

I take it that you're assuming that they WILL achieve some "collector status" at some time?

With the possible exception of the STE/SE AWD models (and I even doubt those), I can't imagine ANY FWD A-bodies reaching any sort of collector status ever. There were simply too many of them made, there was nothing really spectacular (in a collector's sense) about them, and even the rare models (manual, diesel, aftermarket conversions) won't have any collector's draw...in my opinion.
