Buick Regal GS/GSX?

I'm looking at buying a 97-04 Regal GS/GSX. Anyone here ever own one (or really any other SC 3800 V6 Car)? Thoughts? Issues I should note when buying?

I'd really love to find an original Stage III GSX (270hp), but they're rare as all hell, and there's no reason I can't just do the SLP upgrades myself to a normal GS.

Re: Buick Regal GS/GSX?

My wife loved her 98 Buick Regal GS. Put over 100K miles on it before we traded it on the Caddy CTS. Only problems she had was a rear power window. That Buick hauled azz. Good choice.

Re: Buick Regal GS/GSX?

i have a 1996 Riviera with the L67 and its a beast, it easily leaves a pair of stripes on the pavement. Its a great engine with a lot of low end torque.

Re: Buick Regal GS/GSX?

My mom had a 2003 Regal GS. It had 81,000 miles when she traded it in for an '06 STS. No problems at all except a rear power window switch which someone else just mentioned also, a faulty Cigarette lighter & some random brake/fog light bulbs. It stalled occasionally when you'd put it in reverse after letting it idle for a while (usually during winter months when she'd run outside to let it warm up), but that was the only driveability problem ever. Other than that, a Service Engine Soon light once (O2 sensor), a set of tires and 2 sets of front brakes. I drove it alot as well since she bought it when I was in highschool. Never broke down and had alot of power on-hand. One negative, it required Premium gas & the Supercharged 3800's absolutely GUZZLE it when you have a heavy right foot.

Re: Buick Regal GS/GSX?

Forgive the queston........but is the GS equipped with the 3800 and the GSX equipped with the 3800 S/C?? If not, what's the difference??

Re: Buick Regal GS/GSX?

I believe the s/c was optional on the GS at first but became standard by some year. The GSX was done by SLP if I remember right

Re: Buick Regal GS/GSX?

The GSX is a modded GS with the L67. In Stage III trim it makes 270 hp with Cat Back dual exhaust, CAI, 180 degree T-stat, 3.5" pulley, and high ratio rockers and pushrods.

Re: Buick Regal GS/GSX?

270? That's all they could crank out back then for a concept car? I realistically plan on putting down 350 at the wheels

Damn.........I've heard of SLP screwing with Camaros & Firebirds & other misc. Pontiacs, but I never thought they'd lay their hands on a Buick.....

Sounds sick though......

Its not so much a problem of how much power the engine can crank out, its how much the flimsy GM 4-spd auto can handle without grenading.

It's not only the transmission that doesn't like much more power than stock but the differential and halfshafts. It's also a non-intercooled factory setup. I cannot really think of any other turbo or supercharged factory setups without an intercooler.

The GSX comes with a 3.5 pulley which is a very minor pulley change from the stock 3.8. When most people start modding the L67 they usually start with a 3.4 and a few other mods to combat knock retard.
