Buick Grand National brake system

I have a stock '87 Buick Grand National and am looking for a powermaster cylinder. Anyone know where I could find one? I've been told mine cannot be rebuilt. I'd rather keep it original & not switch it over to a vac system, if at all possible.

Boy, does this bring back memories. Back in '86 I had a new GN and after about 5000 miles I needed a new master cylinder on warranty. My car sat for nearly a month waiting for one. Evidently Buick had only the same number of master cylinders as they did cars. As you know the master cylinder was unique to this car........and similar to the one used on limos at the time.

Thanks for the memories.

If I were you, I'd switch to a vacuum system. However if you must have the Powermaster (AKA Slugmaster), check out the list of GN vendors here:

GN vendors

Someone there should be able to help you out.

If you are really ambitious, you can get a used one and rebuild it yourself:

Brake technical info

I only want to keep the 'Slugmaster' to keep the car stock. Thanks for the list of vendors.

Re: Buick Grand National brake system

Before your rebuild the whole thing, pinpoint the source of the problem. If the motor does not run, it could be the motor or the pressure switch. If the motor runs all the time and blows the fuse, it's probably the pressure switch. If the motor cycles too frequently (like every brake apply) and the BRAKE light flickers, it's probably the accumulator. All those parts can still be bought new (the accumulators are generic repros though). Most of the problems with the Powermaster seem to be these external parts, not the inner seals and stuff.

We have the brake booster pumps and we are also currently working getting complete powermaster units rebuilt. For more information, visit the website: www.nos4gn.com.

Is this similar to the Teves Mark II?

Re: Buick Grand National brake system

Mine blew on me in '97. Got my 2nd one and it's still working fine, but I'm on my 3rd accumulator, 3rd power pack/module for the plug wires. Same rad though due to regular flushes.

Took it to Cayuga twice in the early 90's.
