Needs more dash buttons!

That looks really nice... big classy Oldsmobile. Not a big fan of whitewalls, but it's quite a car. I always liked the rear end on those things, and those cool hide-a-way headlights.

Wow!

That car always makes my list of vehicles that deserved a better sales fate. (Along with the usual suspects: Reatta, Fiero, Allante.)

Makes a sweet convertible.

The seats are disgusting, but otherwise it's an elegant car, beautiful in an understated way. Perfect colour!

Re: 1990 Toronado convertible for sale on Autotrader

It's strange how the owner shelled out several thousand dollars for a convertible conversion, but was too cheap to pay for any options. No color touchscreen, no steering wheel controls, not even a center console with the cool "airplane throttle" shifter.

Still, it's a very cool car. Those Toronados were definitely underappreciated; it's a shame they weren't more successful.

Re: 1990 Toronado convertible for sale on Autotrader

I never noticed what the steering wheel was like in these, but they received a MUCH better wheel than the '90 Reatta and Rivi.

The original buyer definitely should got the color VIC, and the airplane shifter. And those wheels...they gotta go. Throw on some silver 5 spoke 16''s from a Cutlass Supreme. And wrong color, I'd take black or white

My other concern would be "cowl shake", where the structure of the car including the dashboard shakes. Reatta convertibles had it bad, and many were scrapped new because of it, even though they had quite a bit more metal added to the underbody

The VIC was not on the Toronados with bench seats. The shifter you refer to was changed in 1990 to a T- handle shifter.

Eh, gimme an '89 Trofeo, digital dash cluster AND VIC please. I liked the shorter, square style better

Same here, though that rear 3/4 shot kinda reminds me of the Chrysler TC by Maserati....

Interesting car, but this embodies everything that was wrong with GM (and is now being fixed slowly). I hate to say it butis it any wonder Olds was axed?

What was so wrong about this car?

It is a perfect example of how GM failed to read the market. The market for the big, personal luxury coupe (and coupes in general) had pretty much crashed by the time this model was introduced in '92.

But the car itself was a nice piece of work. This one didn't have the CRT, which was a much improved version (in color) of the much-criticized one in the Reatta and Riviera. And Roger Smith was right about the criticism of these CRTs. He said, "If the Japanese had done this, they'd be praised for being so innovative."

There was only a hardtop in production, this convertible being a custom job. If you look up an MT review of the Trofeo coupe, they did a comparison between it and a 5 Series BMW. By their own admission, it was an odd comparision, FWD Olds vs. RWD BMW. But they actually called the review a draw; the Olds acquitted itself quite nicely.

Re: 1990 Toronado convertible for sale on Autotrader

I just remember how many of these cars were already falling apart within a few years of being on the road. There were plenty of these cars in this year model range that were already showing signs of deteriorating paint within a year or so of being new. I know they drove well, but the QC wasn't too good. My '89 Suburban was repainted within 1 year of purchase. The late '80s up until the early '90s were just not good years for GM QC.

I've always been pretty lucky perhaps.

I had a '90 Reatta, similar chassis as the Toro, that I bought in '98 with 63K miles on it. Put another 81K on it in 5 years and sold it in great condition, both in appearance and mechanical.

I bought my '90 Firebird in '03 (yep, contrary to any advice I received, I bought a 13-year old used Pontiac). It has well over 100K on it now, and I've had no problems.
