Re: 1971 Eldorado Convertible (Restored)

Wow man, fantastic car. You don't even have to know old cars (I sure don't!) to appreciate something like that! Can't wait to see pics of it beside your 2008 CTS... wonder if it comes in Zodiac Blue too?!?

When the new generation '71s were introduced, I literally could not believe my eyes - suddenly, it was 1950 all over again. They looked to me as if they weighed about 40,000 pounds apiece, and as if they had been designed for a target customer at least 100 years old. It was almost impossible to believe these were successive generations of the same car.

I would love to know what possessed the Cadillac styling staff to go off on such a totally different concept of design and feeling. I mentioned earlier that I thought the '71 ( in fact, the entire generation lasting through 1978 ) was too similar to the 1950 Cadillacs, and I dislike them for the same reasons I've never liked the '50 - '53 models: bloated, ponderous, inflated and swollen looking ( I know I'm in the minority on this - practically everyone else seems to love 'em ).
You could say the same for the Toronado of the same vintage. The Toro got beat even worse by the ugly stick Riviera made it out pretty good but of course this was a slightly different car

That's a beautiful car. Makes me want to break out an 8 track tape of Elvis singing "Promised Land" and go cruising with a big pair of thick chromed framed shades.

It was. And I think that was deliberate. This car was the first "Post-Modern" car. The 1967 was very avante-garde, especially for a Cadillac. This handicapped the next generation car from the start. Since being even more modern wasn't deemed possible, the designers looked backward, probably for the first time. The 1971 Eldorado is arguably the first "retro" car.

Looking back from today's perch, I prefer the original '67 as a design. I was never able to have one of that generation myself, but I was fortunate enough to have had a 1972 Eldorado convertible. It was far more gaudy than the 71 pictured here being white with a red leather interior. I loved it.

And CLASSYELDO: Take good care of it. It's beautiful!
