The fastest 1970 LS6 Chevelle SS 1/4 mile time obtained back in the day was (1969 Car Craft magazine) - 13.12 seconds at 107.01 mph. So the 1968 Hurst Olds at 13.2 seconds must have had a true horsepower rating right around the LS6 Chevelle (the 390 horsepower gross rating of the Hurt Olds 455 is underrated).

Same thing for the '70 Buick GSX Stage 1. Totally underrated.

Must've been a 455 thing, GM didn't want the boys from BOP to steal the SS454's thunder.

Re: 1968 Hurst/Olds Vintage Road Test

Musclecar Review magazine did a story years ago that gave true HP output for most of the top dog cars of that era. The Olds 455 W-30 and the Buick 455 Stage 1 were the closest to actual rated HP if I remember correctly. Makes sense since most of the '70 model GM musclecars turn in pretty similar times with the top engines and similar configurations (4 speed, around a 3.42 or 3.73 rear end)

I used to watch this show as a kid on the speed channel - always fun to see these old roadtests. That car pulled some good numbers I must say even by today's standards, very impressive.

So true the 1970 Stage 1 455 powered GS and GSX were indeed underrated:

In fact Motor Trend obtained a 1/4 mile time of 13.38 seconds back with a Stage 1 455 powered GS. Motor Trend declared this car in that issue the fastest muscle car they had tested.
