Window washers

Dear Ed Welburn,
Could you explain to me why GM and the other auto makers are going back in time and putting those two ugly window washer sprays on the hoods of some of the most beautiful cars? Is it because you found a warehouse full of old junk parts and are trying to save a few bucks? Please throw them ugly things away that take away from the beauty and lines of the car. I don't know how a designer would let his beautiful car be junked up with these unsightly thing that you don't even paint the same color as the car!!!!!
I hope you can get me a answer!

I wish they would put the old 'wet arm' like my old beretta had! that was very effective!

Re: Window washers

They could just hide them between the windshield and the back of the hood like some cars.

Re: Window washers

I agree. Love the wipers that spray the water on my Grand Prix. Heck, even better if they'd put wiper arms that hide under the hood like in the old Firebirds. That was a great idea.

Re: Window washers

GM isn't the only car company out there that puts the washer nozzles on the hood.

Re: Window washers

With the sprayers on the hood, engine heat thaws the fluid and keeps them from becoming frozen.

The people I have come into the shop with washer lines frozen are mostly ones with the nozzles on the arms. And the main reason for that is because there is too much cheap WW antifreeze on the market.

I mean if the engine will heat the fluid, what's the point of heating the windshield washer fluid separately, like on Lucern, DTS, and a number of Lexus?

Re: Window washers

my sunfire had the sprayers in the arms also. i liked them in the summer but in the winter i hated them. the snow and ice would build up on the cowel and then they would work. my G5 has them on the cowel but the hood is covering them

The heat of the engine is only enough to keep the fluid from freezing. The heating system you find in the luxury cars makes the fluid hot enough that it'll melt ice on the windshield itself. Huge difference.

Re: Window washers

I've noticed some Subarus have defroster lines in the windshield where the wipers rest...why can't GM do this? Sorry to go off topic

My Reatta has the sprayers in the wiper arms, and it is pretty sweet. Don't have any experience with them in the winter though

1) the good fluids don't freeze

2) in snow-country, the hood-mounted nozzles have to cut through ice and snow on the hood to work. forces you to scrape off the hood to clear them off, and I've scratched my hoods in the process.

hood mounted washers = not a good idea ... and I'm talking function, not even considering the styling impacts mentioned in the lead post.
