Why did it take GM nearly 3 years to answer a letter?

If I did not think this was so pathetic, I would think it was laughable. I just received a letter in my mail yesterday (4/2/07) from GM's "New Devices Section", dated March 28th, 2007.... The first paragraph reads as follows:

"...The New Devices Section received your correspondence to General Motors Corporation on November 16, 2004."

...So they finally shoot off a letter now, in 2007, acknowledging it? GM has GOT TO BE KIDDING! Good gosh GM, make belive it got lost in the mail or something. A reply almost 3 years later is embarassing!

Does anyone else think I'm right in sending another letter, this time to Lutz himself, with a copy of the response from his "company"?

What did you send the letter for in the first place?

The New Devices Section of GM just agreed that MP3 CD playback capability really is important to buyers, and that the 8-track is not making a comeback.

That is pretty pathetic, but I am surprised that you even got a letter back at all. Normally when you send a letter to a big company about that kind of thing it is the luck of the draw to get anything back.

You should be happy you got any response at all, to be 100% honest.

Return the letter to the sender at GM : "Deceased"....maybe they'll speed up the response next time.

Re: Why did it take GM nearly 3 years to answer a letter?

Monteal,

That sounds like a great idea... But my guess is that I would get a condolence card back in about 7 years, and it might actually come in time to be true!

rhvfd10,

I was inquirying/suggesting the use of more High Intenisty Discharge lights in their lines of autos. I mean... it was a nice, short letter... but NOT almost 3 years later...

2.5 years for an answer about headlights... I wonder how long it took someone at GM to write that up? 5-10 minutes? Ridiculous.

Re: Why did it take GM nearly 3 years to answer a letter?

It took VW only two months to get back to me regarding their Buick-style struts on my Golf diesel.
I could have waited three years to be told to get screwed/have a nice day/piss off.
But I'm patient.

To be fair, it's not November 2007, so it's not even quite 2 1/2 years later. But it's very odd to receive a response back this long after your letter.

I once wrote a letter to Nissan when I was in college. I had an offer to get a free pair of binoculars if I test drove a new Pathfinder. The dealership didn't want me to drive one because I was young and they figured it would be a waste of their time, so they allegedly "validated" my card anyway. Unfortunately, they kept the card, and I know they just threw it away. I wrote Nissan a letter (pre-Internet) requesting my binoculars and didn't ever get anything back from them. In spite of my idle threats to not consider Nissan products if I didn't get my binoculars, I ended up buying a new Nissan 11 years later.

Re: Why did it take GM nearly 3 years to answer a letter?

I write letters frequently to large companies, either to praise or to blast a certain product, or practice by the company. About 95% reply, usually within a month or two.

Back around 1983/1984, I was doing a project in high school and wrote to all the car companies worldwide for data and presentation material. I got material back from GM, Ford, Holden, Honda, Isuzu, Mazda, Toyota, Nissan, Fiat, BMW, VW, and Mercedes.

Ford, Isuzu, Mercedes, Toyota, and Nissan sent me full press kits, via courier, that weighed about 10 pounds each! Ford's media director (or whatever) included a rather lengthy personal letter wishing me luck on the project.

GM only sent one item, but it was a very informative booklet that basically told you anything important you needed to know and was loaded with data. That's where I learnt about GM's assembly plants and which products were built in them. Also included, like Ford, was a very nice letter, but it came from some odd office, like Export operations or something like that.

I kept all that junk, and sadly, was all lost in Katrina.
