Hi, I have a 1966 chevy II SS that an American would like to purchase from me.The first item on the list of documents necessary to export to the US is ....Quote... Letter from the manufacturer that the vehicle conforms to FMVSS [Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards] The vin number reads 117376N134955 decoded reads 1..Chevrolet....17...NovaSS...37...2door sport coupe...6...1966...N...Norwood ...134955...serial number. Can you help me with this problem? ]Send me a letter of compliance] Thank you A Genuine GM man

I think this is insane. To my knowledge there is no restriction, the car is a classic over 25 years of age and doesn't need to meet any US federal regulations at all.

Also the FMVSS started for 1968 model cars to my knowledge, so a 1966 is just not applicable. Did some DMV idiot blow smoke on your customer or???

The only time I have ever heard of a LOC needed is for a NEW US car that is being brought into Canada and registered there.
(As long as it meet Canadian specs such as km
speedo, DRLs etc.)
There is a big discussion on this over at Edmunds.com forums.

I have never heard of a LOC necessary for a used Canadian car brought into the US.

This sez 25 yo cars are exempt:

Heres the rules:

Read this about a Canadian car to the US importing:

ALL vehicles exported to the US from Canada MUST have a Letter of Compliance. I locate vehicles for US citizens and they come to the Canadian side of the border to buy them If it is for personal use they DO NOT have to involve a Registered Importer and they DO NOT have to wait the 30 days quarantine that a US Dealer must wait, I prepare all documents and give them to the buyer at the north side of the border and it takes them about 15 minutes in Customs. Currently vehicles are much heaper due to exchange rate.

I am NOT planning on buying anything in Canada. Is there a set of instructions for that?
