Funny thing is, most of this would be parts bin stuff. We know there are manuals that work between the Atlas motors & 4X transfercases exist (GMT355's), I'm sure the GMT355 pedal ass'ys & clutch hydraulics could be used or adapted. Perhaps they'd need a reworked console as a new part. Of course they'd need to certify the combo; but its mostly parts bin stuff. Ugh.
Too bad the current Xterra looks like a caricature of the first one, because it is available with a powerful V-6, 2 speed transfercase 4X4, locking rear differential, and a 6 Speed manual. Pretty reasonably priced though, and if I decide to go with an SUV for my next purchase in 1-2 years, I will give it a chance. I can live with the look if it suits me in otherwise.
