e 85

ok since I have not even picked up my new truck as yet! the question is if I were stranded on a road somewhere and out of fuel and somebody gave me 5 gallons e-85 could this be run in my non flex fuel truck? what is the maximum amount of ethanol that can be run in a non flex fuel vehicle

10 % ethanol can be used safely.

Re: e 85

The state of Minnesota did a study that showed there are no harmful effects to non-flex fuel vehicles when 20% ethanol is used.

I doubt that 5 gallons if E85 would cause any problems.

Re: e 85

Ford did a study and found that running E35 in the 3.0L NON-Flex Fuel Taurus actually was more efficient than in the FFV one, both fuel economy and horsepower. The study didn't go for a huge amount of miles, but each car used was put through 3-5 tanks worth of testing.

Re: e 85

Let me set some facts straight here.I can speak from experience on this.If you have a non E 85 vehicle and run E85 it wil cause all kinds of driveability problems.Check engine light, poor performance etc.Unless you have an E85 vehicle do not run E85 period!

Re: e 85

I would imagine it wouldn't be the best thing to do, and I'm not certain if your warranty would be affected, but it would seem like if you were truly, really stranded, that a few gallons wouldn't hurt things long term

Re: e 85

^ Why didn't you just buy a truck that is E-85 compatible? Certainly there are enough of them on the lots for you to chose from!

Re: e 85

Gotcha. Unfortunately I believe spending the money to retrofit your new truck would really negate any fuel savings you'd get. I could be wrong, but IMO I'd leave it alone.

Glad to see you bought a truck in these times. Care to post some pics??

Re: e 85

i looked at toyota, fords ,and even dodges and either none were in the price range or dealers were not wanting to deal and as far as toyota even thought it is made in the us their roots are japan so buy American if possible the dealership that I got the truck from was extreamly pleasent not like another chevy dealership, the sales manager was rude and playing games with me! even after I told him what I wanted and explained to him in his office to quit playing games ! his responce was well what do you want to pay? I then walked out of his office and told the sales man sorry he is not going to sell me a truck and to thank his sales manager for screwing up his sale I then walked out he even e- mailed me and ask if I was still in the market for a truck
I e-mailed the salesman back and told him his sales manager lost him the sale and that i purchased one

Re: e 85

Where do you think you "might" be that would have E85 and not regular gas?

Could you run it? Yes. Would it run right? Probably not, but should get you far enough down the road to top it off with regular and then you should be ok.

Re: e 85

I dont know if I would trust putting E85 in a non flex-fuel engine. E85 has a average octane of 103, and compaired to the 89 you are susposed to use in your engine, can you say predetonation!!! I'm not sure the difference in the FF engines as compaired to the regular non-FF engine. But if there was little or no difference they all would be FF! I would not do it! If you want to use Ethanol spend the extra and get a FF capeble truck!

You have that octane/predetonation thing backwards.
