DOHC Engines for GM

GM should really invest in some decent DOHC engines for its mid-size sedans. Not that the old pushrods are bad engines, its that the time period in which those were competitive has long passed, and instead of GM having a variation of 7 DOHC and OHV V6's in its fleet, wouldn't it be better to have 2 or 3 excellent DOHC? Basically, the Ecotecs are fairly modern, and the northstars could use a slight update, but other than that, GM doesn't have that much to do when it comes to development. There could be the variation of Ecotecs, followed by a 2.8L V6, and a 3.6L V6, with maybe a 3.2L in the middle, or they could just tune the 2.8 and the 3.6 for different applications so that they don't have overlapping engines. And another thought that I had was, does any automaker offer DOHC V8's in their trucks? Would that work well, or is it too expensive, because if the displacement was reduced and direct injection was put into a V8, it would be very powerful while still having decent fuel economy, but thats just my thought on it.

Re: DOHC Engines for GM

GM has an excellent 3.6 DOHC V6 that can be easily configured for 2.8-3.8 and NA to turbo charged. The problem is in the execution. GM has the goods they just need to put it with a 6 speed auto and then put it in more cars.

Re: DOHC Engines for GM

I have questioned GM's rather bizarre V6 practices for a while.
It appears there are numerous fiefdoms, rather than a planned and coordinated attack on the marketplace.
Given their history--"Past is prologue," Shakespeare said--I seriously doubt there will be anything that looks rational coming around the mountain in the next five years.

Re: DOHC Engines for GM

The problem is cost, first and foremost. With GM as a company attempting to offer the greatest amount of value to its customers at a reasonable price, its a no-brainer as to why they have stuck with OHV technology: It is cheaper to build, maintain, and operate. The engines weigh less and are actually smaller in size, despite the obvious displacement increases.

That being said, the LY7 (3.6L V6) is spreading around GM at a surprising rate, and I wouldn't be surprised to eventually see the smaller-displacement versions showing up in other Epsilon cars sometime soon.

We'll see what happens, but I can be agreeable with the notion that we could use more DOHC V6 models. That being said, I don't want DOHC on the V8s... Leave that one to Cadillac and Buick, and Cadillac and Buick alone.
