Camaro should of waited
It's no secret GM is losing market share, it should come as no surprise.
Why would this company lets cars like the Cobalt and Impala, both in need of redesign long ago, flounder while they burn money and time on the impractical Camaro? |

Re: Camaro should of waited
because thats how they do!!! besides if they waited any longer the Camaro would not have come to fruition with the bankruptcy and all

Re: Camaro should of waited
The Cobalt replacement was in the works for a while and is already on sale in Europe and Asia. It's delayed here because GM wants to put a specific, high efficiency engine in it. It would have come out earlier this year otherwise in North America.
As to Impala, it was slated to go onto Zeta. The fuel costs last year coupled with the economic collapse and then GM's bankruptcy put the Zeta-based Impala on hold initially and then, apparently, canceled it outright. Impala is now slated to go onto Epsilon II. So, GM had the Cobalt replacement, the Cruze, ready but not the engine -- for the Camaro, the engines are already extant. GM wanted to make sure the Cruze has this new highly efficient engine for a variety of reasons, not least of which is to shake their image of not having fuel efficient small cars. The estimates we've heard is that the Cruze will get 40+mpg which will make it the class leader. And, as Arcangel pointed out, had they delayed the Camaro it may have gotten the G8's fate. After all, the G8 was slated to move to Oshawa for production. Yet now, we see the Camaro selling better than GM had hoped, which means it will be profitable which, in the grander scheme of things, is GM's entire need at the moment: to be profitable. No profits, no GM.

To appeal to enthusiasts GM needs to build on a flexible platform and be able to build small numbers and do it profitably. Hopefully we'll see some of that in the future with Alpha and Zeta, assuming the latter survives. |

Re: Camaro should of waited
The Camaro isn't impractical to real drivers.
My grandfather drove a 1966 Chevelle which is still in the family through three mountain passes during the winter for 5 years during a 200ish mile daily commute. A RWD, high horsepower car. Today, by comparison, many people cannot drive their toasters.... I mean Camrys, through the same area. The only thing impractical about the Camaro is it doesn't have rear doors. But that isn't that big of a deal. Your spoiled little kids can deal with sliding the seat up to get out. |

Name another car in GM's current lineup that is selling for full sticker price?
Seems like a home run to me. -Elliott

Re: Camaro should of waited
Sticker price on a new Camaro?
Heck! The dealers in my area are still trying for $5000 over sticker on a SS v-8s while the v-6s are gathering dust bunnies at MSRP! Ahhhh.......Once the hysteria and "gotta have it" is over the deals will be out there!

Re: Camaro should of waited
we are selling all of ours AT sticker V6 or V8 and all are gone, except for 1 black V6 with NO RS package, The RS makes the car in my opinion, the killer lights does it for me.

Re: Camaro should of waited
I just saw a red Camaro last night when out with friends....we thought it looked great...I disagree that GM should "have" waited.....the Camaro could be a bright spot for them now as they recover.

Thanks, I tried to make a subtle reference to that pet peeve of mine too without picking on him. For me, this is right up there with "I could care less".

Re: Camaro should of waited
lol.....of = have. We are all a bunch of smart ass grammar police!
It bugs me too though. To be honest the Camaro should "have" came earlier...not later. The Cobalt should have been replaced sooner, and same applies with the Impala. But the fact is, GM is restructuring, and can't get everything out to the public as fast as needed. |
