GM confirms next Corsa will be built in the U.S.

This came out earlier, but didn't see it anywhere on GMI -- Sorry if it's a repost!

I know there was open-ended speculation on this for sometime. But nice if it's really official.

GM confirms next Corsa will be built in the U.S.
Posted on Wednesday 23 January 2008

Due to rising demand for fuel efficient cars in the U.S., carmakers are keen to increase their respective small car lineups in the world’s biggest market. Few are as desperate for the tiny runabouts as the Detroit 3 but things are starting to change. GM is leading the charge with plans to bring the European Corsa to North America for its Saturn range but the strong euro means the car could become too expensive to import.

One solution is for GM to start building the car in the U.S. and latest reports claim that’s exactly what it will do for the next-generation Corsa. “We want the car as a Saturn in the U.S. and we certainly don’t want to import it from Europe,” GM product czar Bob Lutz told Automotive News Europe.

Re: GM confirms next Corsa will be built in the U.S.

Earlier reports suggested a Gamma product would possibly be built in Lordstown next to the next DeltaII products (as well as a possible future Alpha product). We have the UAW to thank for leaking some of that to the press when GM finished their negotiations.

However, in light of CAFE and the "building in America to get credit" formula, I guess this would make sense.

I don't know how much money they could possible make on such a small car, but certainly the new UAW contract will help them to come closer to a profit.

I also assume that since this product will be built in the US -- and since Gamma is supposed to spawn the next Aveo as well as the next Corsa -- we very well may see the Aveo produced in the US for North American consumption?

I could have sworn that up until very recently, the Aveo and Corsa were going to be built in Mexico?

This sounds like a no-brainer to meet CAFE standards. Its a money loser if you import and you get no CAFE credit. Hopefully with the new UAW agreements in place GM can figure out how to make a desirable small vehicle in the U.S. that turns a profit.

I recommend that they make available a fairly sophisticated level of technology in this vehicle as options as some Americans will learn to love a small car and still want the bells and whistles associated with larger cars.

I think its a good move. The euro is killing the dollar, and this will help keep jobs here in the US.

Does this mean that MONSTER V-8 cars could be produced in the land of OZ, be imported and not count against GM in CAFE standard?????

Just my thought, but when they say U.S. I think they mean North America.

Now how much will be lost in translation? You have the Aura sharing nothing with the Vectra except for the front end. The Vue got tampered down as well. That is why I love the Astra. It is 100% Opel. NA barely even touched it.

Why build this car for profit when it may allow you to build large suvs for their profit? Even if sold for only a few hundred $$$ of profit, the ability to keep producing trucks and SUVs will make this appealing.

Re: GM confirms next Corsa will be built in the U.S.

Good, it will be American made and it won't be powertrain/option stripped like the Astra is IMO.

Re: GM confirms next Corsa will be built in the U.S.

This makes a lot of sense with the strong euro/weak dollar. This monetary relationship is likely to continue especially with the Fed cutting interest rates like crazy and ECB expressing their desire to not follow on the Fed's path.

This car will be able to be built in the US and exported to Europe for a tidy profit much like Toyota does for the US.
