GM to stop production of Buick Rainier

General Motors Corp. is discontinuing production of the Buick Rainier.

The Rainier, a mid-sized SUV, represents about 2.5 percent of daily production at the plant, with about 20 coming off the production line each day, said Tom Wickham, GM spokesman.

Wickham said GM expects increased production of other vehicles to offset the loss at Moraine. He said the decision about which models will see increased production hasn't been made, but will be set after dealer orders come in this spring. He would not speculate about how it would impact employment levels.

Wickham said employees and dealers are being notified about the decision.

With the distribution plan of buick Pontiac and GMC vehicles sold under one roof...

    Why have the Rainer...?

    Makes sense....

You have the Envoy, Acadia and soon to be released Enclave....

Even thats too many but at least its less than if they kept the Rainer as a lame duck in the dealerships..as part of the future lineup.

JMO and thanks for the heads up.

GM to stop production of Moraine-made Buick Rainier

    http://biz.yahoo.com/bizj/070206/1413637.html?.v=1

General Motors Corp. is discontinuing production of the Buick Rainier, which is made only at the Moraine Assembly.
The Rainier, a mid-sized SUV, represents about 2.5 percent of daily production at the plant, with about 20 coming off the production line each day, said Tom Wickham, GM spokesman.

Re: Another GM Model Bites The Dust

I liked the Rainier, better than its Olds counterpart, of course I am not sad to see it go because the Enclave is gonna blow consumers away! My real question is what GM will be doing with the Envoy and Trailblazer over the next year or two. They announced cancellation at some point, but I'll be said to see them go completely... I wonder if there is a market to keep (the 5 passenger version only), sorta like Toy has the highlander AND 4-Runner. Just my 'deep thoughts,' what do you think?

What are the other vehicles built there? Trailblazer and Envoy? The death warrants for those have been all but signed, I thought.

Also, the Isuzu Ascender and Saab 9-7x.

You could drop the Envoy at the same time given the Acadia. That would leave Chevy the Trailblazer as a unique product in a dying segment until their own Lambda CUV arrives.

I think that the 97 an Ascender are also built there. I wonder though, if a mid-life refresh of at least the Envoy and Trailblazer is not worth it. Give them the looks of a junior Tahoe/Yukon, new interiors, drop the LWB models(already done?) and re-engineer the plan to make a mid-size truck/avalanche style version. I alway though there could be room in he truck line between the small Colorado/Canyon twins and the full size Silverado/Sierra, a true mid-size BOF truck with either the 4200 or the LS V8 options. Heck, they could use this platform to make a successor to the Astro/Safari van twins, and use the new flex-maunufacturing techniques to make them all at Moraine.

Re: Another GM Model Bites The Dust

Well now Buick has gotten rid of the last real POS. That Rainier was holding them back, now the line includes only good and great vehicles.

Actually that Rondevouz (sp) really needs to go away too, but keep the minivan for a bit becuase well, lots of old people like minivans.

This is one of the biggest GM problems. We have mostly decent vehicles, but they make way too many versions of the same thing. The Envoy and TB are nice enough vehicles, but when they slapped a Buick badge on it, they just didn't add enough extra to make it worth buying that over the Chevy or GMC.

So long Rainer - Hello Enclave. Get ready for Buick SUV sales to go through the roof. I predict that Enclave retail sales will far exceed combined Rainer and Rendezvous sales combined.

I forgot about those. And judging from sales, so has everyone else. I wonder if Saab and Isuzu could make use of 10 more each per day?
