Now, what would have happened if:

1. The LaCrosse was not a LaCrosse but an all-new Buick Regal, being e.g. essentially what the Saturn Aura is, or even more - without the 3800, but rather new, DI engines, a hybrid option and whatnot?
2. Instead of the Lucerne Buick got the WM Holden Statesman as the new Buick Roadmaster?

Then GM could really claim Buick is all-new and stun reviewers and later the common man with how much they've changed.

The problem is that the "big change" moment was reduced to giving the old dogs some new clothes, with more or less hopeless results (whatever you say, the current LaCrosse is simply desperate), and now they are trying to tell us everything is alright, and we need no new Buick, but just continue along the line... Even though a lot does change with this new LaCrosse, the marketing/PR opportunity was lost.
Sums it up quite nice.....additionally I could see a WM version Roadmaster kicking the snot out of Lexus' LS series.....

Well if Holden would have design the Zeta Platforum light to-begain with there would be a Buick Roadmaster RWD sedan. Case in point the camaro weight 3700lbs. Yes I wanted Buick too have a RWD car, but I don't wanted it weight 4,000lbs either.

It's too bad everyone won't get over this naming BS. If the car is good it will sell, even with a crappy name. I am eager to see this car, no matter what it's called.

I say stop changing the names. I don't care if the name is crappy or not....just don't change them. Constant name changing seems like a cheap gimmick to make people forget about previous models.

It is a cheap gimmick, but very good at that. Anybody remember GM ever made a Chevrolet Citation or Celebrity? And if sb brings that up in a discussion, the other side can always say - oh, but they don't make them anymore! Now, let's see people arguing how great LaCrosse is when the small percentage of Americans who even know the nameplate know it is an old dud?

This is the same reason why I believe Ford was wrong to resurrect the Taurus nameplate.

Re: 2010 LaCrosse Coming To LAIAS; LaCrosse Name Official

I'm not a big fan of Ford names or poducts but the Taurus is certainly one that I always hated. At least Ford had a best seller with that name but the Taurus happened to be a success in the dark years of the US auto industry (1980 - today...).

In my opinion, any name that hasn't been used before 1980 isn't worth to resurrect.

Ford rarely found good names for it's cars. The only names I can think about that I like: Thunderbird, Galaxie, XL, Falcon, Mustang and Torino.

And the 3 names that Buick actually uses are bad. THEY SHOULD ALL BE REPLACED. I think the same about the cars!

I think it looks great! Will it be built alongside the Camaro in Oshawa to replace the outgoing Allure/ Lacrosse?

I absolutely disagree. Ford has had some really good names in the past:

Falcon
Fairlane
Fairmont

They all fit nicely in the F-theme, along with Focus, Fusion and Fiesta, which are all really good nameplates.

I believe the Torino is the odd one out (Ford... Torino? Fiat Torino is OK, but Ford?), the Galaxie was used in another form in the 1980s. Left are:

Maverick - really good name
Granada - good name, though Fairlane is better for the purposes it could be used
LTD - horrible three-letter thing of obscure origin

Or perhaps do you mean Ford of Europe nameplate? Well, those are in fact disputable (Prefect? Abeille? Anglia?)

I do agree however the names of new Buicks are bad. They should go the R-theme:

Regal
Roadmaster
Riviera (really, the more I think about it, it is a very fitting name for a large crossover in the absence of a coupe)

Re: 2010 LaCrosse Coming To LAIAS; LaCrosse Name Official

The one time that I think GM should change a model name and they refuse to give it up. I can justify using the LaCrosse name in China because it was one of the models that helped Buick become so successful in that country. In the U.S., the car wasn't that successful and didn't really build much market recognition. For some reason, "Invicta" sounds more upscale and pleasing than "LaCrosse". Since that was the name of the concept car, it should be the name of the production version.

No. The new LaCrosse is going to be built in Fairfax, KS where they build the Aura and Malibu.
