what customers see?

This morning, I had a tourist come in with a V8 engined Envoy heading north...

The stopped for gas at the Interstate exit down the highway from us and noticed a rattle from the engine compartment.

They had stopped closer to Illinois at a big-box repair facility and were told that they had a rod knock or timing chain noise. The people thought that was strange as it didn't appear to be "catasrophic"...so they continued...when they stopped for fuel near here, it was much worse and they were worried.

Our shop is closed on saturday, but parts is open...they roll in....and this fellow asks me to listen to his Envoy...

I go out there and pop the hood and I see the belt idler pulley is hobbling about as the engine is running...

I tell him to pull into the shop, I turn on the lights and look...I release the belt and I show the customer the pulley flopping about...

He was relieved....I wrenched off the old one & wrenched back on the new one....

His bill....$46.09 plus the tax for the pulley...

he & his family were elated, as the new pulley silenced the noise!

He told me I looked trustworthy, as he could tell from my "appearance", not wearing a Tie or a fancy polo shirt ....in fact I was "out of uniform" meaning I was wearning a black Pontiac T-shirt and my regular grey work pants as it's hot here today!

He tried to make me keep the change from a $100 bill, and I wouldn't...

I said, if he was pleased with the service from my store, he should write 2 letters...one to the dealer owner, the other to GM.....

I hate to self proclaim here, but it always feels good to help someone and simply enough as well!

Re: what customers see?

He was absolutely correct in his assessment of your character. As for the Envoy, small problems, easily taken care of by someone who knows what they're doing, UNLIKE the box store garage that wanted to sell the guy an engine rebuild.

These crooks are part of the problem with GM's "quality control issues", but then I digress.

I hope GM sends you a framed commendation. You deserve it for saving a fellow human being and his family from a large unnecessary repair bill, and for likely creating a life long customer.

Cheers, GMCSonoma.

Re: what customers see?

That was great of you GMC. Nice to see more good happenings from the GM dealers. I've had some very pleasant experiences with Pontiac and Saturn which I sure will continue. I'd be greatful as well if I were those customers.

Nice job.

Re: what customers see?

Great work GMCSonoma! It feels good to help people out, doesn't it? I do it every chance I can. I don't care what I get or don't get in return, but it feels so damn good to lend a hand to someone in need. I wish more people would do this.....it makes the world a much better place!

Re: what customers see?

I hope they write the letters. They are lucky that they stopped in your neck of the woods. I would hope most small town dealers would try to help out. I have hope that mine would.

Appreciate that, knightfan. Hard to take over the world when the other takeover-er doesn't know what the plan is.

Re: what customers see?

Good job Sonoma.

We get alot of tourist here on week ends, as we are on the Canadian side of a major border crossing.

Long lines, sometimes up to 6-7 hours, cause many problems with vehicles. I like helping out the best I can, but now I cannot get into the parts department on weekends, which makes helping very hard sometimes.
