supplier discount question

My wife has supplier discount through her work and I was wondering if I should tell the salesperson upfront that I have it or try to work a deal without it. I have heard that sometimes you can do better without using the discount.

Re: supplier discount question

Why not use the internet salesman? I would email the dealership, tell him what you want and that you have GMS discount. Ask him what out the door price would be. Copy the letter and walk in the next day. Don't tell them you have the discount and see what you can get. If they beat it, then you won't need GMS. If they can't, say thank you and walk out. Go back the next day and work out the deal with the internet salesman.

Depending on the model, yes you can do better than supplier sometimes. A hot seller might be more difficult. Sounds like likearock had good advice (I might try it when I go to buy my 08 CTS)!

Re: supplier discount question

I'm betting you could do better negotiating on your own with those models. I'd definitely say to keep your GMS discount to yourself and use as a last result, unless you don't like to negotiate.

Re: supplier discount question

Y'all don't misunderstand there is a difference between "supplier" discounts and GMS pricing.

Supplier discounts are based upon a purchaser's qualifying through his/her employer who is himself a qualified GM supplier - companies such as Bendix, Goodyear, UPS fall into this category.

GMS pricing is reserved for GM employees, employees of certain subsidiaries (Delphi, etc.), and dealership employees. The difference in amount of these benefits is considerable in most cases.

Supplier pricing is usually set near invoice, or "net" as dealers call it; sometimes a bit higher - sometimes a bit lower. So it is possible, theoretically, to negotiate a better deal.

GMS is set at figures closer to "triple-net", or the absolute cost of a unit to the dealer. Seldom will a dealer negotiate anything off of these prices, although I understand some foolishly do.

Remember, to obtain pricing from either of these programs a customer must prove his qualification with authorization numbers from GM.

I find this statement funny as well as a salesman, do you know what supplier discount is?? a percnetage? a dollar amount?, you probably dont, so when customers come in here and say hey I work for CN, I get supplier discount, we say sure, here is your discount, and done....they dont kow what it is supposed to be and have no idea what markup is in the vehicle, so if you came in and said I get supplier discount for such and such, I say sure you get $1257.34 off this perticular model, you cant say 'no its more then that' you have no idea what it is...

and you basically cant negotiate any more, since that is what your supplier discount is....like most said it can work against you, unless you know what your so called supplier discount is.....which you wont...most places will just say here is your discount, follow me to the busniess office.

we just use fleet rebate and go with those....

Usually the difference between Supplier and GMS is 4.5% with GMS hovering slightly below invoice and supplier slightly above it. I only know this because I once qualified for both (GMS thru my Aunt, and I got Supplier).

You can look up whatever discount you get online, usually at the GM Friends and Family site. Dealers have to follow the pricing to get the "kickback" from GM.

I'm eligible for supplier and have a company code. Once I log in it re-directs me to a version of GM Buypower that shows a supplier price along with MSRP. So, I'll have an idea if the dealer is lying to me on the supplier price.

exactly, i used to get it from jci and the dealer has to show you the computer screen and or print it out saying what the supplier price is. i did it twice like that and fixing to do it a 3rd time.

Good question, I don't know the answer.

Any dealers out there that can answer?

Also, I wonder if the supplier price is listed on the invoice?
