Re: Ready to buy
The only way that happens is on a straight cash deal. That's a very small percentage of deals. If there's any type of financing, lease or with a last minute thrown in trade, the dealer is absolutely in the driver's seat.

Re: Ready to buy
You retailed the car. The dealer is offering wholesale. Most people will wholesale their car and take the tax savings and realize their time is too valuable to try to sell an old car and have the people it attracks call them and hassle them.

The difference between a private seller doing this and a dealer is that the dealer was taking the absolute low value for a vehicle that was worth more than the average. Could they have bought other Blazers up left and right for $5500, yes. Would they be in the same condition, more than likely not. If the dealer would have come back and said, $7500, we probably wouldn't be having this conversation. A splitting of the profits would have been fair, and would have gone forward. However, they didn't see it this way, and, IMO and only my opinion, lost the sale. I'm not trying to bash the salesman, but I am pointing out that each and every vehicle is unique. Giving a blanket value because thats what the book says, which is what was done in this case, was not the right way to go about valuing a vehicle.

Re: Ready to buy
Just to add to this friendly discussion:
Let's assume a dealer is asking $9500 for this vehicle in the condition you say it is in. The customer goes to one of these "expert" websites and sees that in absolute MINT condition, it has an approx. value of $7500 because it is above average mechanically and cosmetically. Guess what the "educated" consumer offers the dealer? 6500-7000!! Since most of you here are not selling cars for a living, this is fact 98% of the time. All of a sudden, the consumer has instantly gotten their wholesale license and is entitled to buy vehicles below wholesale. So now it is said from the customer to the salesperson, "You guys are asking waaayyy too much and are trying to rip me off!!". But what you're saying is we should have no problem selling that particular vehicle for $9500 which is what you got privately. Maybe, maybe not. For whatever reason it is, people will pay a private party ridiculous money for a vehicle with no warranty yet we are dogs when we try to sell the same vehicle for the same price. I guess this is why there is war in the world. People just can't agree when they are from different backgrounds. In this case it's dealers vs. consumers. |
