The only way that happens is on a straight cash deal. That's a very small percentage of deals. If there's any type of financing, lease or with a last minute thrown in trade, the dealer is absolutely in the driver's seat.

You retailed the car. The dealer is offering wholesale. Most people will wholesale their car and take the tax savings and realize their time is too valuable to try to sell an old car and have the people it attracks call them and hassle them.

All it sounds like is YOU ripped a sucker off with your truck. Welcome to auto sales 101.

Actually this is a very interesting situation. jfnz24 goes and feels he is being lowballed on his trade because dealers would only pay approx. 5500 for it. He sells it privately for 9500 as he proudly spouts. Sounds like a fair deal? For who? The person that bought it, clearly paid waaaayyy too much. If the dealer had taken it in on trade for the 5600 and sold it for 9500, THERE WOULD BE SCREAMING FROM THE HILLS THAT DEALERS ALWAYS RIPOFF CUSTOMERS!!! But not jfnz24.

Who's really the bad guy when all is said and done?

Personally, I have no problem with him selling his truck for as much as the market will bear. I just don't like the "Bash the Car Salesman" attitude by customers here and then they do the same thing when they sell privately.
Well, as has been stated previously that does not get enough mention is that all values, from trade in to the retail price, are just an AVERAGE of what others are fetching in the market. Therefore, if you have a exceptional vehicle, you should get more than that value, as that vehicle is better than the average. I believed that mine was, and I was proven correct. Did I rip this customer off. No, as I believe, along with him, that the vehicle had more value than listed.

The difference between a private seller doing this and a dealer is that the dealer was taking the absolute low value for a vehicle that was worth more than the average. Could they have bought other Blazers up left and right for $5500, yes. Would they be in the same condition, more than likely not.

If the dealer would have come back and said, $7500, we probably wouldn't be having this conversation. A splitting of the profits would have been fair, and would have gone forward. However, they didn't see it this way, and, IMO and only my opinion, lost the sale. I'm not trying to bash the salesman, but I am pointing out that each and every vehicle is unique. Giving a blanket value because thats what the book says, which is what was done in this case, was not the right way to go about valuing a vehicle.

MEDIOCRITY: It takes a lot less time, and most people won't notice the difference until it's too late.

Re: Ready to buy

Just to add to this friendly discussion:

Let's assume a dealer is asking $9500 for this vehicle in the condition you say it is in. The customer goes to one of these "expert" websites and sees that in absolute MINT condition, it has an approx. value of $7500 because it is above average mechanically and cosmetically.

Guess what the "educated" consumer offers the dealer? 6500-7000!! Since most of you here are not selling cars for a living, this is fact 98% of the time. All of a sudden, the consumer has instantly gotten their wholesale license and is entitled to buy vehicles below wholesale.

So now it is said from the customer to the salesperson, "You guys are asking waaayyy too much and are trying to rip me off!!".

But what you're saying is we should have no problem selling that particular vehicle for $9500 which is what you got privately. Maybe, maybe not.

For whatever reason it is, people will pay a private party ridiculous money for a vehicle with no warranty yet we are dogs when we try to sell the same vehicle for the same price.

I guess this is why there is war in the world. People just can't agree when they are from different backgrounds. In this case it's dealers vs. consumers.
