Hard-sell tactics plague dealers, customers

Anyone here familiar with these tactics?

Hard-sell tactics plague dealers, customers

Paul Broome, a Cadillac dealer in Independence, Mo., hears from about 10 customers a month who complain about his dealership's high-pressure sales of service contracts. But Broome has nothing to do with the disputed contracts or their marketing. Instead, some peddlers of third-party contracts tap vehicle registration data to reach customers of dealerships such as Broome's by telephone, e-mail and direct mail. The boiler-room promotions are "giving the industry a black eye," says Broome, who chairs the Missouri Automobile Dealers Association.

Tear up the mail? I guess I don't get the point...if it's not the dealerships fault, why blame them?

Because it reflects badly on the dealership! Just because they don't sell their customers info does not mean that this doesn't get back to them! I know when I get a mailer from the Chevy dealership it is because I bought a vehicle from them. Same is true for this crap. You buy a car, and suddenly your up to your ear in junk mail. You don't have to think about it too long before you think that the dealership is tied to it somehow.

The mail is one thing- I would be pissed off with the phone calls most of all!

I saw this article in the paper also and wondered HOW these third party "peddlers" are getting this info. I have NEVER been contacted by ANYONE about an extended warranty EVER! Either the dealer is dealing with someone who is selling this info OR the MO motor vehicle department rules need to be tightened up. Best bet is to register your phone number with the government's DO NOT CALL program-http://www.ftc.gov/donotcall Every time someone calls you, report them to the FTC. The FTC comes down hard on repeat offenders!

As chairman of the Missouri Automobile Dealers Association, I think Mr. Broome needs to start an inquiry into this practice, if indeed, his dealership has NOTHING to do with this crap. Complaining about it won't solve the problem. I wonder if his dealership is the only one experiencing this problem?
