Did I do my service dept wrong?

Ok, so my tranny screwed up on thanksgiving. When I returned from visiting with my family, I dropped my truck off at my local dealer. They do all of the work to my truck. I left the key in the drop box and left a description of my problem. I then called on friday to check the status. They said they wouldn't be able to look at it until monday. I asked about a rental, and of course they said no because they don't have any rentals. It is extremely difficult for me to be without a car, especially when it is our "family mover". Today my wife gets on me and tells me to take it somewhere else so we can get a rental. I called around and another dealer was more than happy to accommodate. I tried to call the dealership my truck is at but nobody was there as the service dept is closed on saturdays. So I just took it. They still have the key to my truck at the original dealer and I am planning on calling them as soon as they open on monday. Was I wrong in doing it? I feel bad for taking my business elsewhere but I also need a vehicle. What do ya'll think?

Re: Did I do my service dept wrong?

I can't argue what you did. The dealership I always buy from does not provide loaners or rentals either. If it weren't for the sales manager knowing my family does a lot of business with them, I wouldn't get one either. He always offers me one though.

I would have done the same thing. It's not easy being without a vehicle.

If it makes you feel any better...

When my dad had his lemon 2001 Silverado, it was screwing up terribly bad on a Sunday. We had been through a mud-slinging contest with the dealership, so he got pissed and parked it at the dealership owner's house. Needless to say we got a NICE loaner within hours.

I should note that we live in a small town, and the we knew the owners on a personal basis.

Re: Did I do my service dept wrong?

If the vehicle is under warranty, you are obligated to a rental if you are put out, as you are...
My medium sized store has two tiers of loaners...a new-ish Pontiac G6 convertible & a 07 CTS for our current model year warranty customers that bought the car from us...then we have 8 old program cars... a Vibe, a few Malibus, a few G6's, a Grand Am, Impala & Grand Prix for eveyone else...
I can't believe dealers don't have some form of loaners or rentals available...I know of a tiny little Chevy-Olds dealer (5 employees) near me that even has a few!!!

They might not like you anymore...but that's business...they'll either accomodate you again with open arms and roses of apologies, or they'll tell you to go elsewhere...

Do they have voicemail so they at least know your truck wasn't stolen???

Yeah, it's kinda rediculous IMO too. They don't have voicemail either. I'm glad you guys are understanding.....I was really on the fence on whether to do this or not. I hope they're not pissed.

If they are...there are plenty of other stores you can patronize...

The dealer should be the one that feels rotten for not having a loaner available. It also should feel rotten for selling you a vehicle that is not working. You sound like a kool-aid drinking Toyota fanatic: apologizing because your car broke down, like it must be your fault.

You needed your truck, and they couldn't fix it during the time frame. If you live close you might leave a note in the drop box. Bring them some donuts when you tell them, food fixes everything.

Re: Did I do my service dept wrong?

This is why I try to form a good relationship with the service department and don't worry about who I buy the car from. The service department sells a service - one where customer service is paramount, and repeat customers receive better service. I always get a loaner. If I didn't they know I'd go elsewhere. Sales sells a fixed product - a CTS is the same at every dealership, save a silly decal I have removed anyway. All that varies is the price.

Re: Did I do my service dept wrong?

I guess every dealership is different. Pontiac didn't even offer a loaner/rental on my brand new car when they had it in the shop for 4.5 days.

Chrysler ALWAYS gave rental cars when I took it in for service. They arranged for Enterprise to have a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicle ready for me when I dropped off my car.

Now with the SRX, the Cadillac dealership has an Enterprise location on site. So, that's good.

Dealerships need to realize that people NEED their cars, and not everyone can juggle their lives to arrange for alternate transportation. If a car is in for warranty work, a loaner should be discussed at the time when the appointment is scheduled.

Re: Did I do my service dept wrong?

Strange that a dealer could survive without a loaner or a local enterprise agent on hand.

I would not go to a service department without one.

Re: Did I do my service dept wrong?

When I had to drop off my GTO they didn't have any loaners and they called and arranged a car for me at the local enterprise lot. I didn't even buy my GTO from the shop that I dropped it off at so I was impressed and will give them the first shot at my business if my next purchase is a car they carry.

Re: Did I do my service dept wrong?

I don't think you did. You need a vehicle, and they couldn't provide a loaner: their loss.

I mean come on, what's it cost to keep a Malibu or Impala or G6 or some other decent car around for customers?

Re: Did I do my service dept wrong?

I was 16 miles from home this afternoon, and claplop-pop-pop-pop...the Park Avenue stalls....low coolant light on & won't restart...
Guess what...the UIM launched....****!

Thanks be for having connections...25 minutes later a tow truck from town was loading it & me up and we headed for the dealership...instead of grabbing one of the parts trucks, I took a G6 loaner instead...it pays to be a key holder on a late Sunday afternoon!
