Working for gm? How is it?

I just landed a job selling new GM vehicles. I have been a mechanic but wanted to try something new. I turned down a good job working on euro cars because I wanted to support and help an American car company. So anyone have advice on selling GM's? What to look for? How was your sales experience? ect.

Nitpick, but I don't think working "at" a dealership is working "for" GM.

Dealerships remind me radio stations in a way ... Some are still family owned, passed down from one generation to another. The owners and their sense of ethics, matter more than the brand. Then some are part of mega-chain corporations. The automobiles being sold could be changed by contract as a marketing decision, like shifting music formats is in the radio biz.

Make sure you know your competitors product as well as you know your own. Never bash the competitor thou, always play to the positives of your product, and not the negatives of the other brands. Understand your customer and the demographic they fall in, always understand what they are looking for in a vehicle. Be a good listener, and NEVER try to put your opinion onto your customer.

Oh.... make sure you always have breath mints, look professional, talk proffessional. If you smoke, do everything you can to mask it (that includes not smoking where a customer can see you when they drive by), nothing worse then a sales man that smells like the marboro man

Good luck in your new career, I wish you success.

...typically, it's NOT the COMPANY, but rather the immediate SUPERVISOR that makes your working life a literal "...h3ll-on-3arth..."

Check the reputation of the dealership you're working for. It makes all the difference in the world.

Be friendly, helpful, and honest. Find the salesperson with longevity and mimic their attitudes and actions.
