What's it take to get a job selling cars at a dealership?

What's required for me to pursue this? Not as a permanent move, just a temporary thing. Do I have to be certified? Be a certain age? Have a certain "look"? Or do I just stroll in and ask for an application?

    God Bless the Blue Bullet.

If you can breathe and hold a pen, they'll take you. It doesn't cost a dealer too much to employ you. You will need to attend a class on how the process works, but that's about it. If you sell, they'll keep ya. If not, they won't pay and you'll quit.

That's what I was telling my girlfriend, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't oversimplifying things.

Does it matter that I'm only 21 years old? How long is the training session, typically? Is it harder to get a job at, say, a Chr/ysler dealership than a Che/vy or D/odge one?

I'm not looking to make big money, I just want something to do during summer break.

    Are work hours flexible?

Dealers like young guys (and love the women). They are hungry and really want the sale. Training sessions vary, but around 2 weeks. If I were you, go with Chevy or Ford. Go with the biggest dealer around, they will be the quickest to employ. Hours depend on store hours. Normally they go 12pm-8pm, 8am-6pm, 8-12am, then off a day. Something like that. Dealers don't want "part-time". They want your ass on the lot selling product at all times.

I'd rather pick a brand whose cars I'd like to be around.

If I sell well, will I be allowed to take cars out a little bit?

I was under the impression that they had dozens of employees but only wanted a few on the lot at a time? If they want everyone working full weeks, why are lots often so empty? Is it because there just aren't that many employees?

Wait, I'll be on a rotation of work shifts? I won't have one recurring shift? Hmm. Since when are dealerships open till midnight? Will I have to do desk work?

Re: What's it take to get a job selling cars at a dealership?

I dunno, this is an exploratory topic. I'm a good persuader, I know a lot about cars, I think I could be successful in sales. Even if I'm not, it gives me something interesting and dynamic to do every day (I don't need the money, like I said).

If I wanted to to brainless crap I'd work retail or something. Like I said, I don't need to take in money right now, I'd rather not work at all than do pointless work.

I don't mind working a 40 hour work week, but I would only work from mid-May through the end of August. Is that going to be a problem?

    Go get the job..

Dont tell them its part time.

Make up some bull**************** story about you leaving college for a couple of years etc..

Then come the end of the summer...

    quit.

    JMO and good luck.

Long hours in an industry right now thats in the dumper.

    I'd suggest another summer job...

JMO (very little money to be made at the dealerships)

    They are not selling cars.

You are in metro NYC, maybe???...as I said, that is up to the respective store...
I probably wouldn't tell them until 2 weeks before, anyway. Assuming I stay that long.

    I'd be on Long Island.

So basically you want him to lie. This wouldn't surprise me if YOU didn't trust salespeople. I guess it's your guilty conscience.

Re: What's it take to get a job selling cars at a dealership?

What the hell do I know..

Here's a young man that described what he was looking for.

    I threw out an idea.

    Could be right...could be wrong..

Best way to go at it...

Is try your honesty way and tell the dealership you'll be working for a few months only.

I'm sure that will work and if it doesn't? After a few various dealership interviews he can try "lying"?

    Good luck either way.

Sorry if in some way I offended anyone.

    That wasn't my intention.

The basic description of "the dealership lets people work as long as they sell and let them quit if they don't make sales" left me with the impression comradre wasn't a prime concern in this envirioment...(sp)

It sounded like an environment of "usage" rather than ethics.

    I apologize for misunderstanding.

It seems this is all up to you...it's your life!

Good Luck with whatever you decide...
Who cares? I'm going to be selling their cars for them, what difference does it make if they only get 4 months out of me?

This is what I figured, too.

Re: What's it take to get a job selling cars at a dealership?

if you get it at the right time it dosent take much. I sold cars for about a year right after high-school for a local VW/Subaru/Nissan dealer. All I did was call a number, had a interview, and take a 2 day class on closing deals & doing paperwork and viola, I was a salesman. I didnt not like it though, to many stupid people to deal with. The local Chevy dealership near me is always getting new salesman. If your have a pulse, you speak english, and can write your name you wont have a problem getting a job in car sales, believe me.

Because it may come to a suprise to you people that Some Dealerships care about their customers and CSI. How many of you complain about going back to a dealer and your salesman is long gone. Would you like to by a car from a guy who is gone next week. Many of you have 0 respect for salesman and then you are shocked when you get no respect.
Go back and read the post. There are many insulting post here.
