Rebate apply before or after tax?

Should rebate/incentives from GM apply before or after tax?

If you go on to GM's website...it often display message such as...

    MSRP $30,000
    rebate -$2,000
    ===================
    you pay $28,000

that sounds like it's apply before tax?
but then I was otherwise today... i'm confused.

Yes the only way to reduce the tax you are charged is to have a trade in. Other than that the rebate is the last thing you do to a deal.

It's after tax. You have to pay tax on the amount before the rebate.

In PA we only pay tax AFTER all rebates and incentives are applied. Our C4C deal on Wednesday had our HHR SS MSRP at $26,260 minus all incentives we were just under $17k, 6% sales tax was $1004 which can be completely written off for 2009 taxes.

It's the same in Texas. You only pay taxes on the amount you are actually paying for, so all discounts, trades and rebates are discounted from the sale price to give you the taxable amount.

In Tennessee you pay tax on the amount BEFORE rebates are deducted. Sucks !

Here in NY its sale price minus trade in $$ then sales tax is calculated.
    Rebates/etc. are then deducted.

It depends on your state's tax laws. Not all are the same.

Wait a minute. The above information is what I was told by my dealer and what was written into my contract. Of course, it sounded like California to me so I acceped it.

In today's LA Times, in a clunker article, it states, with no source credited to the statement, that "California tax authorities have said the tax should be assessed on the discounted price"

    Emailing salesperson now

The clunker is counted as a trade in not as a rebate.

Depends on the state rules. In PA, we pay tax AFTER rebates. Right next door in Ohio, they pay tax BEFORE rebates.

ya same here, but again Canada, here the rebates are taken off the price MSRP, then tax is added..

LOYALITIES are deducted AFTER tax tho, they are treated different
