Do you have part-time sales staff at your dealership?

There is a local GM dealership close by that is advertising for a sales staff position. By reading the ad, it appears to be a full time position. In fact, I hardly ever see part time sales help needed.

I've always wanted to try auto sales, especially with something I'm enthused about, like GM products. Not looking to switch careers right now so I’d like to try sales part time. Do dealers like part timers? My guess is there may be problems because nights and weekends are the gravy hours.

It also hard to follow people up if you are not there.

Yeah, salespeople normally have to live at the dealership. They won't hire a part-timer when there are full-timers out there looking. Getting the job is not hard, it's finding the sales that is the hard part!!

Re: Do you have part-time sales staff at your dealership?

I don't know of any dealerships that have part time sales staff but this is something that I have been giving some thought to recently.

I have been kicking around some ideas for how I might be able to get back to work(for those who don't recall, I have been at home takeing care of my kids for the last three years or semi-retired as I like to call it) without having to live at the dealership.

My dealership(the one my wife is also a sales manager at BTW) has been getting creamed on the weekends lately. They can not come close to helping every customer that hits the showroom but the rest of the week is steady and comfortable and there realy isn't a need for more staffing.
I was thinking of going in on Saturdays for the day and Tuesdays for the evening. With the traffic they have been drawing I know I can put 1-3 units down the road from fresh ups each Saturday and if something gets held up in F&I or needs accessories, we could set up delivery for the Tuesday evening when I will be in next. I'm sure I could work 1.5 days a week and do 8-10 units a month.

Thoughts guys?

Re: Do you have part-time sales staff at your dealership?

bigest problem I see is sales is Commission and drivin by the fact if you dont sell you dont get paid...if your part time, you have another Job, or the money is not that big of a deal for you so part timers start blowing off customers that are a little diffacult, and dont follow up with them....so customers are lost

If you can work 4.5 days a month and pop out 8-10 units (without dropping below invoice on all of them - a difficult feat in today's market) I know of a few GSMs who would orally copulate a lot porter to get you on their staff.
