Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Rumored to Run 7:08 Nürburgring Time
http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/...z06-rumored-to-run-7-08-nurburgring-time.html

Last month, the world-famous track banned official lap times by imposing speed limits following a tragic accident in March during a VLN endurance race. Those speed limits were also imposed for automaker’s lapping activities, meaning record and official lap times were no longer possible. Now, rumor has it that Nurburgring is backtracking on the statement and could be eliminating those speed limits for automaker testing, which means there’s a possibility that official lap times will, well, become official again.

Related to the rumors of official lap times returning, it is being reported that the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 had run a 7:08 on the track, putting it within a second of the 2015 Nissan GT-R NISMO on the unofficial leaderboard. Unfortunately, now that Nurburgring has put a ban on official lap times, the American automaker is keeping mum about the Chevrolet Corvette Z06’s lap time, which has been rumored for quite some time now. It’s likely we won’t hear anything from Chevrolet itself until, or if, Nurburgring lifts the imposed speed limits.

If the 7:08 lap time becomes official, that means the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is slower than just a few cars in this world: Radical SR8 LM, Radical SR8, Porsche 918 Spyder, Lamborghini Aventador SV and the Nissan GT-R NISMO (depending on the time).

Yet the GTR could only dream of having the sales numbers that the Vette can achieve globally. Hell I think the Z06 outsells the whole GTR lineup. You can keep your Datsun, Corvette(and Porsche) is the better car.

Discovered by whom?
Modified in what way?

I think you're thinking of the Z/28.

EDIT: Okay, so the NISMO had performance modifications that can be bought at a dealer to retrofit the car to be an exact copy of the one that ran the Nurburgring. It is not show room stock per se, but nevertheless, available with full warranty by Nissan.

BTW, GM always sends a special vehicle team to the 'Ring, like most manufacturers. They tune the suspension and run more aggressive brake pads and fluids. They run a role cage, which stiffens the structure and they also fiddle with aerodynamics to make the most gains. Just like the article states: "This is another example of just how pointless Nurburgring lap times are, as they are completely unregulated."

Since the Z06 ran the "record" 'Ring time in mid-May, it seems if GM wanted to release the lap time, it could. Not sure a "ban" on lap times a full month after the fact would play any roll in keeping them from releasing the time. It's more GM excuses to me and any wise person who has followed this fiasco sees it, too. If it was such a damn good time, post it already! GM is not one for delaying "good" news...and now, they could use it more than anytime in their recent past.

GM, despite having run The Ring has declined to quote lap times, even before the ban. The widely photographed picture of the disabled Z at the Ring ushered in a deathly silence from Tadge and the rest of Corvette management about the Z and the Ring. Apparently there have been "Issues."
