It's a 911! It's a Lambo! No, It's The Z/28! www.GMInsideNews.com

video: Chevrolet
It is not every day that Chevrolet makes a car so powerful; so purpose-built as the Z/28, that they can say they can put down track times faster than cars two to three times as expensive, but today is one of those days. Chevrolet just posted a video of the upcoming Z/28's lap of the famed Nurburgring, running around it's fabled laps in 7:37:47. That puts the Z/28 past the the 911 and Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, making it the fastest Camaro ever. For those just climbing out from under a rock, Chevrolet showed off the very unique Z/28 at this year's New York International Auto Show, wearing unique body panels, a seven-liter naturally aspirated LS7 V8 making 505 horsepower, stripped down and designed to do one thing: race.
Watch the video as Chevrolet's newest sports car posts an amazing lap top. Who says Muscle Cars only go in a straight line?
I just wish the price was a bit lower. I was really hoping to replace my '99 Z28 with the new one, but the price of this monster is a bit high. I'd rather get a used C6 Z06 for less than the Z28 price. Killer car though.
I agree that I wish the price were lower, but it will retain exclusivity for that reason. And IIRC, the Z/28 doesn't come with a back seat, so it holds no more people than a Corvette.

Yeah, tell that to all the guys who have dropped valves in and out of warranty who've had to fight tooth and nail to get GM to do anything - sometimes going six months before being told no warranty coverage. Just look at the history of LS7. It is seriously pitiful. I would have bought a Z06 by now if it was any different.
If you want sources, I can provide them or just do a Google search. The LS7 was not produced in high volumes. To have this many problems, and not only with its flawed vavletrain, is unacceptable today.
I saw 160 mph on the back straight at 6131 rpms. Anybody remember what the top speed of the ZL1 was on the back straight? Wasn't it a bit higher than this? This car is all about grip.
That's an excellent driver with balls of steal to do that with what looked like no cage. I guess the Z/28 is aero limited to 159 on flat ground because it was pegged at 159 and only 6000rpm where he was running it up to 7000 in lower gears.
He bumped 160 for a split second going down hill with the wipers on in the rain. haha.
It does go to show that the ZL1 is just/more impressive considering after over 7 minutes of hard driving they are less than 5 seconds apart with the track ready Z/28 wearing a $3000 set of tires during it's lap.

That's because GM for whatever reason put the WRONG transmission in this "track" car. If they were smart, they would have went with the ZL1 transmission. That, in conjunction with the 3.91 rear end (or even the 3.73 in the ZL1) would make 5th a real power gear, providing the power to accelerate to 7000 RPM at 174 MPH. That would have knocked off some serious time. There are a number of tracks, here and abroad, which would allow this car to stretch its legs to the top of 5th in my scenario. Sixth would pull much better, too.
It's a shame this was overlooked on what is otherwise a well packaged high performance street car.
EDIT: Here is a run down on the gear ratio and speeds using the ZL1 transmission:

If GM wanted the better highway fuel economy achieved with the current 6th gear ratio in the Z06 (.50/1), then they could have just requested Tremec to swap 5th (.74) for the ZL1's (.80/1), as the Z/28 uses the Z06 transmission as it is. Problem solved!
zL1 topped out at 172 mph on the back straight but was 4 secs. Slower at 7:41. My guess is the rain slowed the Z/28 down and it could run faster than 7:37. The Zl1 also entered the back straight faster and finished it faster, but again the rain came into play here.
What in the world are the Corvettes going to do? Their numbers are going to be nuts. If the ZL1 and Z/28 get this type of performance the Corvettes from the Stingray on up are going to be brutes. The performance guys and gals at GM must be laughing their heads off.
Zl1 driver in dry conditions never lifted on the back straight. Reached 172 mph
z/28 driver in wet conditions lifted several times on the back straight reached 160 mph.
This car can get into the 7:35s in the dry.
Because of the type of tires this car has, it really took away a lot of time from its lap time being cold and wet. In dry it is going to pick up more then just 2 seconds....
