Re: Wards ten best engines list for 2007

from most reviews the GM LNF 2.0 DI turbo seems like a much more impressive engine than the VW/AUDI FSI 2.0T

And it oughta get a lot more use. Wonder how it would do in a Malibu? Or a Colorado?

Re: Wards Ten Best Engines For 2007

I don't think the Vortec 6.0 V8 is worthy of the award IMHO. It is just a detuned version of the regular one mated to the special transmission. Unless I am missing something when it comes to the Two Mode system......

Re: Wards Ten Best Engines For 2007

Next year the Corvette Motor will definitely have the be there on the list... the 6.2v8 Supercharged LS(#) <-- sorry, forgot the naming scheme for the new motor

GM makes great engines and I hope that they continue bringing out world class engines and automobiles...

They must like it because it's part of a hybrid powertrain.

Re: Wards Ten Best Engines For 2007

This list has no creditability without the Accords benchmark 4 cylinders, not to mention the overweight and thirsty modular motor showing up while the more powerful, lighter, and efficient LS3 gets snubbed. Wards list seems like a feel good effort that tries to include every manufacturer.

But, it isn't a powertrain or transmission award. It's an engine award. The 6.0 was not really modified in any way to warrant the win. The LS3 deserves it more.

The 6.0 in the Hybrids was motified to use the Atkinson combustion cycle, which is also used in the combustion engine in the Prius and a few other hybrids.

Otto cycle (normal gas and diesel engines): fuel and air are compressed the same amount they are expanded. If they're compressed 10 to 1, they expand 10 to 1 before exiting through the exhaust valve.
Atkinson cycle: it provides less power but more efficiency, because fuel and air are expanded more than they are compressed. They might be compressed 10 to 1 and expanded 12 to 1, which extracts more energy per unit of fuel.

That's why the 6.0 in the Tahoe and Yukon hybrid only makes 332 horsepower while every other current GM truck or SUV with the 6.0 gets at least 350 horsepower.

The LS7 will never make Ward's list because they limit the nominees to vehicles costing no more than $54k. This means the Nissan GT-R engine, and the upcoming LS9 (Corvette ZR1) and LSA (CTS-V) engines have no chance of making the list either.

I can see their reasoning for capping the price, so it won't be a list dominated by exotic engines that no one can afford.

They should probably do two 10 best lists: one with the price cap, the other price no object.

That's pretty cool. Is it expensive? How much does it boost efficiency? And does GM use it on any other vehicles? It would be cool if they added it to the G5 and Cobalt. Those are very fast cars for their segment. They could afford to lose a little power.

Re: Wards Ten Best Engines For 2007

Did Wards distinguish between the DI and non-DI 3.6 L engine?
