Re: Senate Reaches Fuel Efficiency Compromise

35 miles per gallon is how many litres per 100 kilometres? That's how we do it down this way.

Re: Senate Reaches Fuel Efficiency Compromise

I don't think this is terribly fair. Automakers like Honda have a significant advantage over GM, Ford, Toyota, Nissan and Chrysler because they don't sell trucks and they don't sell high performance cars. Then we have Euro brands and exotics. Is Congress gonna tell Lamborghini to average 35mpg? One standard for cars/crossovers and another for BOF trucks/suvs would make more sense.

Looking forward to my Suburban with the .8 liter ecotec and infinite gear transmission that is fueled by happiness, but the interior will still be cheap looking according to edmunds and CR.

Re: Senate Reaches Fuel Efficiency Compromise

So when does the single largest consumer of oil need to conserve? I didnt read any provisions for the DoD to use less.
This irritates me as much as when they take soda and candy machines out of schools/work because people are fat. WTF is so hard about letting people choose and letting the market do what it does.

Re: Senate Reaches Fuel Efficiency Compromise

This effectively cuts in half the revune from gas tax that state and federal government are currently collecting.

Does the bill increase efficiency requirements for lawn mowers, weed whackers, leaf blowers, motorcycles, ATVs, trains, planes, trucks, or boats? Guess not, it's all on the backs of automakers to solve our energy problems.

Re: Senate Reaches Fuel Efficiency Compromise

CAFE isn't the way to do this but if the Senate announced they had agreed on a 25% hike in the gasoline tax to discourage consumption there would have been riots on the streets.

This is both good and bad for GM. It will force GM to spend alot of money to get its fleet mileage up to that new standard. They have 10 years to do it.

GM has been acting like this was already a said and done deal. Without the Prius and the threat of higher CAFE standards, does anyone think Volt production would be happening at warp speed if at all? Does anything think without the threat of higher fuel standards that GM would have invested in developing a new family of smaller V8 diesels for its pickups and large SUV's which will get 25+ MPG? Does anyone think that GM would, on its own, invest in Direct Injection, dual mode hybrids and turbocharged powerplants? Of course not.

These standards are good because they are going to help get Detroit off its collective ass. That can only be a good thing. Higher fuel standards are coming and Detroit should be working to do away with CAFE and that bogus fleet standard to replace it with a much more rational system based on car/truck size and classification.

Um... this won't cost the tax payers anything directly. If your concerned about Government waste just go look at how much money we spend on stupid pet projects and a war that just won't end.

Re: Senate Reaches Fuel Efficiency Compromise

Some watchdog group should publish a list of all vehicles these bozo's own and see how their "fleet" average mpg's compare to the new standards they just passed. Put up or get out of office Fienstupid

Look buddy, my Apache's burn rate of 1100 lb/hr (161 gal/hr) is a real fuel sipper compared to those C-17 cargo planes.

I am sorry. We have tried liquified Democrats, but they keep clogging up the filters.

As if that would be a bad thing. Most of the people who drive SUV's don't really need the towing capacity or the higher ground clearance. Getting people out of SUV's that get 15-17mpg and back into station wagons that get 25+ mpg would be a great thing.
