GMI's Revitalization in Action | The Dream Cadillac Lineup

GMInsideNews is proud to present the sixth lineup in the Revitalization in Action Dream Lineup series. The RIA series has been a collaboration of several on the GMI staff, including Tony Pimpo (ChevroletRevived), the Writer and Director of RIA, head designer George Loizou (FBODYRULES), and vehicle interior designer Nick Saporito (NSAP). Our mission? To show, with realistic feasibility, how great General Motors products can and will be. The last lineup to be undertaken by RIA was Chevrolet, introduced in November of 2007. It was our largest and most complex lineup yet. Since then, a lot has happened. GM is a different company (literally) than it was then, with much reduced brand lineup that has it poised for future success. The Cadillac RIA lineup has been a long time in the making, with much time spent over exactly what lineup to go with and what direction to take the brand. One thing is clear from our viewpoint: right now the brand is showing promise with the just-released ATS, but it needs a well-defined plan going forward.

Four years ago while the first Buick RIA was being formed, we looked to Cadillac as our model for what a brand revitalization could really be. We started off with Buick because we knew the potential that lied within it. Now, it is ironic that Buick has taken on our vision while Cadillac has faltered. The ATS and XTS are very promising, but there is a lot more work to be done. Cadillac needs a full-scale lineup, and one that has its eye toward competing in markets around the world.

We realize Cadillac will take a while to get on track, and that the results will take a while to appear. However, for Cadillac to truly be all it can in the future, changes have to start being made now in terms of future developments. With models like the SRX already in production, and the front-wheel drive XTS on its way, Cadillac won't get its lineup truly sorted until well into the next decade. We are at the same point in this decade as we were when Cadillac launched the original Breakthrough campaign. With Revitalization in Action, we like to think of it as Breakthrough 2.0. Cadillac certainly has a head start in 2012 versus 2000 - we think it can be done.

An Overview

Right now, we view BMW as the golden standard for the luxury segment. Love it or hate it, there is no denying the brand has a laser focus and a strong foundation for success that lies in its three core models: the 3, 5 and 7-Series lineups. They are considered benchmarks for each of their respective segments. With those core model lines in place, BMW has been able to expand with models around the foundation. As such, they have created new segments or played in new ones with vehicles such as the X6 and 5-Series Gran Turismo.

Now, as with any manufacturer, yes there are flaws - for instance, interiors that could have more of a focus on design. That's where Cadillac comes in. We believe that Cadillac absolutely can become a true competitor to BMW. But it begins with a clear differentiation in outlook and positioning versus what GM perpetuating with Cadillac right now. The whole basis of our lineup is based on the assumption that Cadillac is destined for greatness. We see Buick as the Lexus-style competitor, and Cadillac primarily as the BMW competitor.

Buick once had a stated goal of being the "American Lexus," which we viewed as a good place to start. Especially considering that Lexus found success largely by co-opting Buick brand values. There is a place for a more quiet, comfortable luxury vehicle in America. As much as people would like to argue otherwise, few buyers cross shop Buicks and Cadillacs - they appeal to different buyer bases for the most part. We are happy to say, that while there is work to do, Buick has become the American Lexus.

The Enclave is the hit we expected it to be, and the LaCrosse is selling in larger amounts than its target the ES. Transaction prices are also on the upswing. That is impressive, and a turnaround quicker than any of us expected. Especially when you consider that Buick has been hampered by a small lineup that still includes the Lucurne, years of ineffective marketing, and the drag of GM's restructuring. Somewhere along the way however, Cadillac decided it wanted to be Lexus too. Hence the SRX and XTS, both based on front-wheel drive platforms. The problem is, the SRX should be an X5 competitor, not an RX competitor. The previous SRX failed because its styling was too-wagon like for its time. However, it was critically-heralded. The SRX should have rectified the problems while keeping what was right intact. Instead, the SRX now ranks at or near the bottom of comparison tests, despite selling better than ever before. Cadillac used to have a brand specific platform in the form of Sigma, which still underpins the current CTS. Given its high costs to produce, that platform is being phased out for Alpha. Alpha is all-new, designed for premium applications and we're using that as the basis for a large swath of the future Cadillac lineup. This enables more investment to be put into the platform for premium duty, and higher margins. What's more is that few vehicles in the GM network will share the platform, helping to increase exclusivity. For most of the Cadillac lineup, there won't be an equivalent vehicle based on the Alpha platform anywhere else.

The Dual Personalities of "Art & Science" as a Brand Philosophy

In the luxury segment, we believe vehicles should not be differentiated by trim levels. Buick has realized this, doing away with all trim levels in its model lineup by 2012. Acura does this with packages like Entertainment, Advance and Advance Entertainment. BMW differentiates its models by engine capacity. For Cadillac, based on an idea by Alex Villani, we have developed a unique approach. Art & Science is a term that has associated with Cadillac ever since the beginning of the Breakthrough program. It is used to succinctly sum up and describe the philosophy of Cadillac's design language in one phrase. There is no doubt that Cadillac has a long history being automotive art, with beautiful vehicles that convey passion, but also science, being at the forefront of new technologies.

What the XTS/XTS Concept and ATS have showed us, especially in the interior, is that there is different aspect of Cadillac design that can be tapped into - and both work well. The XTS Concept's look - chrome surfaces, wood grain, and retro laser-etched stitching show off a different personality for the brand. But at the same time, there is another side of Cadillac - for instance, best typified by the V Series, that works just as well - angular lines, carbon fiber accents and aluminum trim. A dual-personality, if you will. Why not tap into that? Our Cadillac lineup debuts two designations, Art and Science (example BTS Art 2.0T, BTS Science 2.0T). They will primarily focus on differences visually, but they also include other changes. Art is the more classic Cadillac style trim, with wood interior surfaces, a clean body appearance with chrome accents and suspension tuning that centers primarily on providing a sport/comfort balance. Cadillacs that wallow are firmly a thing of the past, but this approach enables Cadillac to appeal to a broad swath of the market. Science is equipped with the latest technologies and changes things up with a sharper, more V-like exterior appearance, tightened up suspension and in the interior, piano black, aluminum or carbon fiber surfaces.

Beyond that, each car will be differentiated by engine capacity designations, with the available engines ordered on either Art or Science packages. Various option packages can be added on from there, meaning you can order your Cadillac just the way you like it. So now, without further ado, we present the Cadillac Revitalization in Action lineup.

We know what you're thinking - BTS what? Cadillac just introduced the ATS last month in the entry-level compact segment. This is where the bulk of volume in the luxury market resides. For Cadillac, the new ATS is considered to be very small - about the size of an E46 BMW 3-Series. Introducing this car is a big step forward for Cadillac, but the fact is globally and here in the U.S the market luxury is becoming even smaller. Already there is the Audi A3, BMW 1-Series, and a small front-wheel drive Mercedes-Benz sedan is on its the way. If Cadillac is going to compete globally as a full-range luxury brand, it needs to leave a slot below the current ATS. And to have a coherent naming scheme, we've left that open and called what we know as the ATS, the BTS. This car was designed before we saw the ATS, and it shows what we think is a very youthful, dynamic approach to the segment.

We love the ATS as it is, but it could have been more cutting edge in the design department. It looks like a shrunken, softer CTS and that is no bad thing. In fact, we think it ranks up there at the top of its class. Despite that though, the envelope could have been pushed more. The ATS/BTS is a car that should have already been on the market for years. The question is, what took so long? With the 3-Series as a perennially hot seller for BMW, Cadillac has lacked a model that truly went head to head with it. The original CTS perhaps came closest to doing so, while the current model released in 2008 straddles the fence between 3-Series and 5-Series.

Thankfully, the BTS (and ATS) has a good basis for success - literally, with that basis being the Alpha platform. During GM's bankruptcy, Bob Lutz had to fight the product board for the development of Alpha. The primary reason Alpha is around and underpinning the ATS is because of this decision. The product board's desire? Epsilon II. Thank goodness for car guys.

BRX



As most of us know, at conception the current SRX was designed to be a new entry for Cadillac, the BRX. However, the next-generation Sigma-based SRX got shelved, and the rest is history. While it was the best move under the circumstances to badge it as SRX rather than BRX, it is clear that Cadillac needs more than one crossover. It is crazy to think that Cadillac, as a supposedly full-line brand, has just one. That is where the BRX comes in. The BRX would be the crossover companion to the BTS, positioned in the small crossover segment.

This is the fastest growing category of the luxury crossover market. We haven't heard anything concrete from Cadillac on the possibility of a new small RWD crossover, but one is clearly needed. Power at the low end would come from the turbocharged 2.0L 285 horsepower four-cylinder that will likely be Cadillac's volume engine for the foreseeable future. Like it or not, four-cylinder engines are the future. If Cadillac is going to compete properly, it is going to need to adapt. This engine would give the BRX good power and fuel economy. Those who want more grunt and naturally-aspirated power can opt for the 3.6L six-cylinder, which makes 325 hp. This option is also there for those who want to a bit more capability for light-duty towing.

CTS








When Cadillac's $6 billion "Breakthrough" project began in 2001, the CTS was the model that kicked it off. Since then, the CTS has been the brightest star of the Cadillac lineup. And throughout its run it has remained the best example of what Cadillac can be. Particularly the V-Series lineup is a shining star for Cadillac. It is featured in advertisements and consistently mentioned in contention with the best of what Germany has to offer. This approach needs to be taken across the board.

What the CTS has been hampered with since debut is a fundamentally-flawed competitive position. The current generation of the CTS, introduced in 2008, increased the car to a similar size as the BMW 5-Series, while retaining a similar price to the 3-Series. This left the CTS dynamically unable to compete with the 3-Series due to its larger size, while being unable to compete with the 5-Series on a feature set. Cadillac should not be a value proposition. As such, the CTS will be moving upmarket for the next-generation, based on a larger version of the Alpha platform. As far as the specifications list, this is very much what you will be seeing (except for the V-8) from the next-generation CTS when it launches in 2014. That is on purpose. For the first time, the CTS will be positioned exactly where it should be. That is a significant step forward. Now the only question is styling. With Cadillac debuting a more watered down version of its design philosophy with the ATS and XTS, we think the CTS should push the envelope in the design front. The CTS you see here is likely a good bit bolder than the production car you'll see for the 2014 model year.

SRX


With the BRX now free to take on competitors in the compact crossover segment, SRX moves up to squarely compete against the BMW X5. Ditching the Theta platform of the existing model, the SRX regains the dynamics that won critical acclaim with the previous-generation SRX. Nimble and rear-wheel drive, the SRX's styling conveys this transition with an aggressive design that conveys motion. Styling is one of the redeeming qualities of the current SRX, and in RIA it is taken to a new level. The SRX shows off a unique twist to the traditional Cadillac vertical taillights that would be used on the BRX and SRX, as well as a rear lift gate that has a subtle "V" shaped worked into the glass shape.

XRX


Many people have said that the Escalade needs to change to either become a three-row crossover or a full-on Range Rover competitor. We say leave it alone; Escalade will always be Escalade - it should largely remain its unique niche of the market. What Cadillac needs is a new three-row luxury crossover to go head-to-head with the Audi Q7. The largest of all crossovers, the XRX would be the height of luxury in this segment. The XRX would be far more dynamic than the Escalade both in drive and styling. A sleeker, lighter design also translates into better fuel economy, meaning this car would have a lot of the attributes that the Escalade's detractors say they want. With the XRX Cadillac would have the most important segments of the crossover market covered. Cadillac green lighted a three-row crossover based on the Lambda platform, but later shelved the product. With the Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave all on the platform it doesn't need a third variant. A more luxurious and engaging variant on the Zeta platform is the way to go for Cadillac.

XTS


Like the BTS, this is a car that should have been here already. It's amazing to think that the Cadillac lineup has gone without a true 3-series or 7-series competitor, even after Breakthrough's goal was to align Cadillac with the luxury competition. Instead, Cadillac has competed with the 3-Series and 5-Series at various times through a combination of the too-large CTS and too-small and uncompetitive STS. With our RIA lineup, that competitive situation is rectified. The XTS is in the size range of the 7-Series lineup, but it really takes a uniquely Cadillac approach to the full-size segment. Full-size luxury is all about proportions and presence, and the XTS has that in spades. This kind of design is something Cadillac itself has explored with the Ciel Concept, and themes from that are slated to appear on the full-size Omega flagship that is in the works. We think that buyers who want to be more anonymous will go elsewhere. Buyers of the S-Class or 7-Series continue to purchase those cars, this is for those who really want to stand out.

Escalade


In recent history, the Escalade has really served as Cadillac's de facto flagship. Why? Because it embodies everything that has long been associated with Cadillac, but in a fresh package. It is huge, flashy, expensive. Escalade is an image vehicle, and it really has done wonders for Cadillac's perception. In most circles it is a status vehicle, and people of many different walks of life and backgrounds appreciate it for that. This is all being done on with what is a essentially a glitzy Chevrolet Tahoe. Since 2007 the Escalade has had a different interior, and thanks to new trim levels like Platinum has consistently gotten more unique each year.

With our car we don't mess with the formula, we improve on it by making it more of a standout than ever before. Instead of a different front clip and rear taillights, our Escalade gets a whole new body and a thoroughly different interior. Pricing also starts higher, in the $75,000 range. Inside in the Platinum variations there will be a slew of new options that offer Maybach-like opulence in the interior, pushing the price to around $150,000. This is Cadillac, and it is what it needs to be. Like it or not, the Escalade is the modern day equivalent of the Fleetwood. It doesn't really have a competitor. More effort and expense needs to be put into developing the vehicle to be more exclusive to Cadillac. These improvements would push Escalade and its image up even further. As we said early, Escalade is unique and a standalone model; thus it remains the only Cadillac to not fall into the naming scheme. Sorry, ERX just doesn't have the same ring to it.

XLR


With our lineup you're beginning to see the formation of a defined strategy with the X moniker at the highest level - LR roadster, TS sedan and RX crossover models. Last time around, the XLR was introduced as a halo and we're bringing it back in that form. Cadillac needs a range-topping, expensive luxury roadster. While it isn't a volume seller, it is an important image-building vehicle. The XLR had a lot of fans and still has cachet with many today, but it wasn't special enough to woo many customers. That was especially true towards the end of its life, when it was left without update. The XLR V-Series was by far the best example of that car inside and out, thanks to its more defined exterior design and upgraded interior designs. The original XLR's chief failings were its too-sedate styling and an interior that didn't fit its price tag. The idea in theory was a very good one then, and still is today. So, we took the Corvette as a basis and made another Cadillac XLR with far more aggressive styling than the original. The great thing is that thanks to the Corvette there is already a basis vehicle at GM for this car. A new one doesn't have to be developed from scratch, so the business case makes a lot more sense. XLR could be the beginnings of an upmarket expansion at Cadillac.

Cadillac Fleetwood Concept





It's been a tradition with the most recent two Revitalization in Action lineups to include a concept. With Cadillac we wanted to try something different so we asked GMI member Heath Hilliard (commodore88) to sketch out a design for a new Cadillac super sedan.

The result is a sleeker, updated take on the largest and most luxurious Cadillacs of yesteryear. It shows a unique design with an open ****pit and enclosed rear area that would be perfect for a chauffeur-driven modern Cadillac. A production version of this car would be priced into Rolls-Royce territory, occupying a space of the market that Cadillac used to dominate.



If Cadillac is to truly occupy its place at the top of the luxury car hierarchy once again, it will need an all-encompassing effort behind it. And for the brand to succeed, it can't include product alone - although that is far and away the biggest element. A Cadillac ascension to the top tier of luxury includes corresponding customer service improvements, and a thoroughly modern and effective dealer network committed to the luxury car business. That is one thing that competitors like Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and BMW have in abundance - a focus on the customer. We're glad to say that Cadillac is improving in this area - consolidating dealers, upgrading facilities and taking steps toward becoming a top-tier luxury brands.

But yet, it doesn't end there either. You can have all of that and a lackluster marketing campaign. Image is everything. Cadillac needs a sustained advertising campaign that is consistent and accurately portrays what Cadillac is. Haphazard and ineffective marketing is not what got BMW or even Lexus to where it is now. The Ultimate Driving Machine, The Relentless Pursuit of Perfection, anyone? These taglines have stuck in the minds of consumers. When we were first planning this feature, we thought it would be a lineup that would enable Cadillac to bring back its "The Standard of the World" tagline. Since then though, Cadillac has actually done that, bringing it back in the form of "The New Standard Of the World." We think it was too early to resurrect that tagline. Now that's here though, with a full-advertising campaign out there, Cadillac absolutely has an obligation to live up to it. The production ATS is an example of Cadillac taking concrete steps to do just that. What happens at GM product planning over the next few years will be crucial in determine whether Cadillac becomes a true Tier 1 global luxury brand in the next few years. We think our lineup offers a look at Cadillac's potential future as "The New Standard of the World."

First off,

EXCELLENT vision of the product roadmap Cadillac should follow.

Point / concepts that I like:

- Packing the different luxury / sporting combination into ART and Science..Brilliant! And then V would stand for pure performance
- The BTS / CTS / SRX concepts are SICK. Wish those existed now.
- Like the fact you are bringing back the XLR. This is an area Cadillac should have stuck with. It's not too late.
- I really like the Escalade / XTS concepts..although the XTS seems to be lacking for my taste.

Items that I didn't see

- There should be have an Ciel model (convertible / sedan / 2 door ) range to do battle with RR and Bentley
- I also thing Cadillac should go after the Lexus LFA / Audi R8 / SLR super cars with it's own mid engined version. Think Cien. This is also shared with an less luxury oriented, but more performance tuned mid engined Corvette.

Good work.

I really like the new XLR and that is pretty much how I pictured a new XLR on the C7 platform.

I really liked the first shot of the CTS and I really like how it integrates the Ciel concept design cues to the front end of it.

The ATS is slightly smaller then the BMW 3 series so will the BTS be slightly larger then the ATS?, or does the BTS replace the ATS all together.

Here is to hoping that the XLR comes back and that the XLR V packs a SBC under the hood.

WOW!! I'm in love, there's so much about this that is amazing, I can't get over the Art and Science packaging, that's brilliant!! I also really agree with the segments Cadillac needs to be in, and as a 1st gen SRX owner, I can't tell you how much I would love to be able to replace my baby with a RWD version, I just don't love FWD, never have, never will......

All I can say is DOPE!!!!! Very well done, if that was the current caddy Lineup, I would own a Escalade, XLR, and I can't believe I am saying this a XTS....man that XTS is the one of the best cars I have ever seen.....Great JOB...Can't wait to see the Chevy Lineup.

As a designer myself, I feel you guys have a better design sense than Ed Welburn. I really feel someone else should be at the helm of GM Design because he is missing a lot of detail in current GM cars.
The only bad thing about this is that a competitor will execute these designs before Cadillac will.

Hmm... I hate to say it because I love what you guys did with the designs that were there, but it feels a little... safe. Everything thats there is good, but here's some things I would have liked to have seen:

No Converj/ELR? Cadillac should be the future of American propulsion systems, not to mention that we've already been told we're getting it. In the lineup are three vehicles with eAssist, which is all well and good, but even BMW is going to be producing the drivetrains of the future. Without plug-in or electric vehicles, Cadillac is just going to seem behind. Your lineup, while beautifully designed, is competing with today's BMW tomorrow, at which point the BMWs of tomorrow will already be out.

How about a four-door coupe, a roadster, or a supercar? Maybe and X6-esque coupe something-or-other. Would like to see Cadillac attempt to compete in a market where it and GM haven't competed before. Maybe a coupe version of the XTS in classic Eldorado style. Something innovative or exclusive would be very nice here. A Mercedes CL type vehicle for less than 100k would go over well I believe.

You showed us Fleetwood sketches (which were very nice, btw) and talked about a smaller ATS as the future of luxury automobiles, but how about showing them to us, what kind of engines would they use? Nothing larger than a V8 appears in your Cadillac lineup. Not saying a V16 needs to be shoehorned into the BTC, but a V10 or V12 option on the XLR, XTS, Fleetwood, or Escalade would really set them apart from the rest of GM's offerings.

Is the V Series dead? Or is that the top-of-the-line engines on each vehicle (except the crossovers, I guess)

I hate to say it guys, because the images are superbly crafted, but four years later I'm seeing the same ideas I would have come up with four years ago, and that I say elsewhere on this site four years ago. Let Buick be the luxury of who we are. Cadillac needs to be the luxury of who we aspire to be.

I thought Zeta was supposed to be dead.

If not that's good news. I don't mind Camaro going to Alpha so it can be a proper sports car, but I do want a large RWD Chevy to drive after the Camaro. If Cadillac gets a Zeta, it would make sense to use Chevrolet to leverage the platform.

However with Impala going to Super EPII, how is that going to work?

Good stuff all around!

Points:
--The BRX and XTS are GLORIOUS.
--I like that this is a good base line-up. A good, solid leaping point for inevitable upward (Cien), downward (ATS/subcompact) and outward (roadsters, variants) expansion.
--You said the production next-gen CTS will be more subdued than your renders. I hope not. This CTS looks great but it certainly doesn't push any envelopes. Though the ELR headlights look great on the coupe. I feel the XLR could be a tab bolder as well.

All together this is an excellent job guys!

I was thinking the Omega would be the Fleetwood Concept, again great work...but I can see where a Fullsize Coupe/Touring Sedan could be used right next to the XTS (Eldorado) type of vehicle...but other than that, this could be a great lineup for Caddy.
