GM-UAW Deal Near?
GM-UAW Deal Near? ![]() Speculation is flying that General Motors and the UAW are nearing a deal. The former contract expired yesterday and is being renewed on an hourly basis until a new deal is reached. Will this be the deal to save GM? Stay tuned to GMI's Labor Relations section for the latest. |

Re: GM-UAW Deal Near?
I can't see the union going stupid. It knows the hour. It knows something needs to be done. Both sides need to ensure neither side feels screwed in any deal. To regain and keep buyers GM needs to maintain quality in the cars, and that means ensuring that the union is happy with the deal. The union knows it can't kill off GM's turnaround, otherwise all the jobs go "bye-bye". Everyone knows today's GM isn't the GM of the 1950s. The Golden Goose was cooked decades ago. I doubt anyone doubts that fact either at GM or the UAW.

I will be happy for GM and I will give credit to the union for getting the job done. I hope it is a win win for everyone!

Re: GM-UAW Deal Near?
Wow, If they have a deal this early that is outstanding, Hopefully this is the beginning of a "new" relationship between the UAW and GM.. The union needs to take a more vested interest in how well each plant performs, and learn to "work with" GM instead butting heads with them. Look for some big concessions by the union I would expect.. GM has a strong voice this time around and wont be shoved around..

But when I hear what the average union worker has to say about the situation, I start to wonder. It's amazing what people are led to believe when they're in a union atmosphere for years or decades. |

Rick is in that picture talking to the UAW saying "man I could go for some timbits right about now, what do you guys think? Oh and we'll get electric cars blah blah... you guys like honey glaze or chocolate swirl?"

Re: GM-UAW Deal Near?
I think the UAW knows that its own survival is at stake. They need GM to have better margins on their vehicles so they can invest in the future and continue to exist with a UAW workforce. If GM collapses then the UAW will too and auto manufacturing in the US will go down a road the UAW won't like.
They need to fix the healthcare and pension problems, get rid of the jobs bank, and reduce the salaries at least of new hires. |
