2016 Chevy Colorado Diesel Tow Ratings, Power Output Revealed Chevy has revealed power output and tow ratings for its new diesel-powered midsize pickup. AutoGuide.com
By Stephen Elmer
Perhaps smokey Volkswagen Rabbits and unreliable Olds Delta 88s left a bad diesel taste in American consumers' mouths but, when it comes to trucks, it's a completely different story. When Chevrolet introduced the Colorado for the 2015 model year, a diesel was promised.
And now it's one step closer to reality.
A 2.8-liter Duramax diesel that makes 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm will provide power for this truck, which is now rated to tow a maximum of 7,700 pounds, 700 more than the gas-powered version. With four-wheel drive, that tow rating drops to 7,600 pounds, which is still 700 greater than it’s gas-engine counterpart.
The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) has also improved on the diesel-version of the truck, bumping up to 6,000 pounds on two-wheel drive trucks and 6,200 for four-wheel drive. This may only be to account for the added weight of the diesel engine, put it’s also possible that the truck’s existing max payload rating of 1,590 pounds is set to increase.
I think 200 BHP would make NO difference as I believe this will sell because it IS a DIESEL and NOT a "H/D" but one designed for ECONOMY, the people that want POWER will buy something else like the NISSAN V8 Cummins or "actual" H/D offerings
I'm sure it's because they want to pad the price. $3700 looks like a great price compared to the $7K price premium on HD diesels - but if not a 'loss leader' it probably is not all that profitable at that price so they are banking on people getting a diesel on a loaded model. If they offered it on the $21K WT base it would have to price at $5000.
This is what was expected. I suspect in two years they will bump up the hp to almost 200, like the Holden Colorado. AU Coly also does 7700/bs (3500kg) Now let's see the MPG!
I agree with you. Others seem to think this is a great price, but it seems expensive to me. Both city and highway fuel economy had better be a lot better than the gas engines to make this worth all the expense.
"The new diesel engine will be offered in LT and Z71 Crew Cab models, and will also be available with the all-wheel-drive model. It will be priced $3,730 more than a comparably equipped 3.6-liter V-6 model."
That is more than a bit overstated AMcA...... 'VW' offers all kinds of 'Diesel' hp / torque combinations in all kinds of sizes and configurations ..... for all kinds of vehicles and purposes in all kinds of markets.
Some .... bigger and stronger in terms of these peak outputs but also......... a bunch about the same, or weaker.
Including 'much weaker'.
And including critically, in many a market with a less ****ed up combination of 3rd world country diesel fuel with 'nonsensically' less efficient and useful EM standards.
Also... look @ the tow rating capacities they offer here in the USA with diesel equipped product in the Class 1 and 2 range.
Then there is the cost of entry..... in the USA.
Hell, in theory, given the RAM's weights..... Canyon / Colorado look just fine in that regard versus ED Ram although.... need to see the SAE standard used for the rating if any..... because Mopar does it right.
The diesel offers good numbers for a fair price. Thing is the 3.6 V6 offers what most people need in this class. Unless the mpg numbers come in huge I don't foresee a big take rate for the diesel.
My dad owned three Olds Diesels with mixed results. One was really fine, the next OK but smokey and one that was a maintenance train wreck. Two 88s and a 98.
Not sure why Diesels cost so much more now (maybe they did then too) but I glad GM is offering this product.
These are the same ratings GM gave us when the Colorado was announced last December. The only real news is the price. And all I can say to the price is
Features included with or exclusive to Colorado diesel models:
Smart diesel exhaust brake system that enhances vehicle control and reduces brake wear on steep grades
Standard Hydra-Matic 6L50 six-speed automatic transmission matched with a Centrifugal Pendulum Vibration Absorber (CPVA) in the torque converter, which reduces powertrain noise and vibration
The Z82 trailering package is standard and includes a hitch receiver and seven-pin connector
An all-new integrated trailer brake controller is standard and exclusive on diesel models
The G80 automatic locking rear differential is standard
A 3.42 rear axle ratio is standard
A new, electronically controlled two-speed transfer case is included on 4WD models
Maximum trailering rating of 7,700 pounds (3,492 kg) for 2WD models and 7,600 pounds (3,447 kg) for 4WD
GVWRs of 6,000 pounds (2,721 kg) for 2WD and 6,200 pounds (2,812 kg) for 4WD.
Remember, though, that it's not just the diesel you're getting at that price. It has an integrated trailer brake controller not included in other models, it also has diesel exhaust braking, an incredible feature only found on the HD trucks within the last few years. To have it on a midsized truck is even more incredible. Add to that, whatever changes they've made to increase the GVWR, and this is going to be quite the hit. Not everyone needs a full sized truck, and those that like diesel don't want to buy an HD all the time. This is a very, very cost effective alternative
If you subtract out those options you are paying about $3K for the diesel which is a pretty fair deal although I'm a bit disappointed in the 6 speed trans being utilized.
Looks really good -- I'm seriously going to recommend this vehicle to our board for consideration when the 4x leased Silvy's we use for operations vehicles come due. It's the right size, I love the small diesel and the price seems fair.
Hello $53K midsized trucks. Sure they are loaded with all kind of whiz bang technology but at that price surely there will be cross shopping with its bigger brothers. IDK why but I was under the impression that the 2.8 made 400+ Tq. I see I was confused on that aspect.
I'm seeing 30 MPG HWY for the 2wd. I'm torn on what to do/think. So I will wait for a review on this model.

$53K??? A crew cab, short box, 4x4 Z71 lists for $34990. Add $3700 and you're at $38,690. You can add more stuff, but the standard Z71 package is REALLY nice. Can you really option one up to $53K?
I just checked out a Laser Blue crew cab, short box, 4x4 Z71 and it's calling my name REALLY hard. I'm not a big truck guy, but it's very tempting. It's the first really nice truck that doesn't feel like an aircraft carrier.
The diesel in the Ram is a $4,270 option over the base V6. It's $3100 over the V8. You have to step up to a quad cab to even get the diesel and the cheapest truck still crests $35k for a bare bones tradesman.
Edit: forgot about the long bed. It $4770 for the diesel and the truck has a MSRP or $31125
It's not that big of a price increase. A V8 option in the Camaro is almost $9k price difference.

The other thing to remember is that the Ram is boarder line useless in the payload department. The diesel Colorado and Canyon have basically the same towing capacity of the diesel Ram. Good for GM, bad for Ram. Shows the ED Ram for the expensive, overweight POS that it is.
So ya figure adding the diesel option and other min. to a crew LT equipment, 4x4 they are gonna cost
around $40,000 bucks! The big boys are a few bucks more.......................
A few? That's putting it mildly! Any one of the 1/2 tons brands can push the price in to the mid $60's when you decide to click all the boxes. and only Dodge offers a diesel. (And the Eco-diesel isn't worth adding if you want the air bag suspension, unless your wife is a size 0)
