GM workers strike, talks resume

DETROIT (Reuters) - The United Auto Workers union said on Wednesday it had reached a tentative deal in contract talks with General Motors Corp and recessed a nationwide strike by 73,000 workers that began on Monday.

Speaking at a news conference at the union's Detroit headquarters, UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said production at GM facilities would resume on Wednesday and ratification of the agreement by GM workers would begin this week.

VEBA is a done deal
UPDATE

Quote:
DETROIT — The United Auto Workers said early Wednesday it has reached a tentative contract agreement with General Motors Corp. that could end a two-day nationwide strike.
The union said the deal was reached shortly after 3 a.m. A person briefed on the contract told The Associated Press earlier that the agreement would shift the burden of retiree health care from GM to the union and give workers bonuses and lump-sum payments. The person requested anonymity because the contract talks are private.

Thanks for getting this up so quickly mbukukanyau! This is very important news. Glad to see they worked the deal through so quickly. Lets hope it suits UAW members. Obviously if GM agreed it suits them... just have to hope the UAW members get on board and vote it through.

You are welcome. I posted in both GMi and FoMoCoNews, with different variations of the story so that the sites have unique material. But you have already linked to the same sources, oh well!
I hope workers can see sense in protecting the financial strength of their employers, so that it indeed becomes a secure job that they work at.
And Now UAW can pay for Viagra!!
I had to say that

Thumbs up Re: Breaking News: Strike is Over!

Fantastic. I look forward to reading through the agreement.

On a side note... to KUZCO, and other UAW members who posted here in the past two days: thanks. I might not always agree, but your updates and thoughts were certainly appreciated. I like to think that one of the goals of the strike was to show the human side of General Motors, and you certainly did that.

It is my hope that this agreement will prove to be the UAW's Buick Enclave; in other words, a product that can cut through negative and outdated perceptions. Mind you, that should have been accomplished with the 2007 Harbour Report results. It bears noting that UAW plants include:

- the most productive engine plant in N. America (Toledo, OH)
- the most productive transmission plant in N. America (Spring Hill, TN)
- nine of the most productive auto plants in N. America, in 9 auto segments

I'd like to add two quotes, if I may.

The first, from AutoExtremist, December 2006:
"The U.S. will either continue to be a vital producer of goods and service and a manufacturing force to be reckoned with in the world, or we’ll be relegated to becoming one giant consumer nation with little or no control over the vagaries of the global economy – or our economic destiny."

The second, from CAR magazine, written by former editor Gavin Green after MG-Rover collapsed in Spring 2005:
"Most of the pundits who pontificated on MG-Rover’s final failure implied that, actually, despite MG-Rover’s incompetence, it’s going fine for UK Motor Industry plc.

"The Japanese are here! The UK now makes more cars than it did a decade ago. Nissan; Honda, and Toyota are the new Austin; Morris, and Rover!

"True, we make them here. But we don’t design; engineer, and develop them here. In a neat reversal of 100 years ago, we now provide Asia with low-cost, conveniently located labor.

"They do the high-value; university-educated; creative, and managerial stuff. We build ‘em. The only mass maker with a hefty engineering presence left in the U.K. is Ford.

"Yes, we have loads of companies making cars here, with good productivity and good quality. But none is British-owned. This matters in the car business. A company’s home is typically where it sites its senior management; engineers; designers, and key administrators – the important jobs that young people aspire to.

"A company’s home is where it will always, even in the face of low-cost Third World options, locate some of its manufacturing. A company’s home is where it has loyalty; political affiliations; cultural empathy, and key suppliers.

"The disparate U.S.; Japanese, and German-owned car makers which assemble cars in Britain help this country, so thanks very much, and the best of British to you."

Thank you for this. All EXTREMELY good points. I concur.

'Tis why I stayed out of the 'Strike Thread'.

I had a feeling this would be over before it got started...

Good now they can get back to building cars.
