Re: Breaking News: GM board opts to keep Opel

Here I was just starting to agree with getting rid of Opel and making Chevy more global and then they (GM Board) flip flop on their plan. I'm not sure what to think now.

Re: Breaking News: GM board opts to keep Opel

Good news.

Now if the GM Board were smart enough to revoke the death sentence of Pontiac or if they have to buy it back from Liquidation Motors Inc. & make Pontiac a niche brand, at least for the time being, til better times for GM come around.

!!!

Re: Breaking News: GM board opts to keep Opel

I hope it's the right decision. All things being equal, I'd say it the right thing to do. But things are not equal. If the economies in either the US or Europe take another good-size dip this may be something they'll regret.

But, Opel is still a great asset. An asset they've worked and built for 70 years or more.

The irrational side of me is excited by this development.

However, I wonder if the fallout, and there will be fallout, will be too great for GM to overcome.

It was not a flip flop. The German government was forcing them to sell or would allow it to go bankrupt and be liquidated. The EU allows GM to keep it and still get funds from the German government.

Re: GM to keep Opel

Finally something to celebrate! GM will keep its feet in Europe and gain an engineering platform for Buick! Now if Roger Penske will get into talks with Opel about Saturn's future, see I really do know how to ...

Sounds good. Let's integrate Opel and Buick and move forward. Also, I wonder if the Ampera will be back on?

That will not happen. It would be impossible for GM to get it back now.

That's a relief but they should have never considered selling it in the first place.

Thank GOD. But I'm still smarting about the 4.5L Duramax essentially turning up at Ford about a year after GM killed it in the name of economy.

I wonder what this means for Frank Weber, who just recently stepped down from the Volt team?

You guys do not have a clue at all. Gues what will happen: Opel will go bankrupt soon, and I really hope that no government will pay a single euro as a support for this so called restructuring plan that will likely be as stupid as any other effort the GM managemant did in the past few years.

But of course....americans do not worry because they will allways make it because they are american.

You were concerned about the russians getting access to GM IP because you appear to still live in the cold war.

I tell you what: I prefer dealing with russians instead of americans that are full of stupid arrogance and are not reliable partners at all.

**** YOU!

Wow! Maybe I'll be driving that new Kadett real soon after all. No really, I'm quite pleased with the outcome of this recent saga. It should be rather interesting in the near future to see how all this unfolds...
