2010 Equinox: Chevrolet's New Edge?

2010 Equinox: Chevrolet's New Edge?
New 'Nox to sport ~210+ HP, bigger size, Edge in the crosshairs.

July 16, 2008

As everyone knows by now, yesterday in the General Motors press conference Bob Lutz spilled that the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox would utilize a 2.3L engine with direct-injection. GMI has gotten a few more tid-bits on the 2010 Equinox since yesterday; including some power numbers and details on the goals of the GMT-172 program.

From what we gather the base engine in the new Equinox will be an ECOTEC 2.3L four-cylinder with direct-injection as Lutz stated. The engine is said to be good for about 208-230 HP and highway fuel economy of upwards of 27-30 MPG. The final power and fuel economy numbers have not been worked out yet. We have not confirmed what V6 the vehicle will use, but we expect it to be without any doubt a member of the High-Feature V6 line. There are really only two possibilities; a new 3.0L direct-injected which will be good for about 270 HP or the well-known 3.6L direct-injected V6 that would probably dish out somewhere in the 280 HP range. Both engines will be mated to a six-speed automatic. When we can confirm a V6, we will let you know.

We have also been told that the primary target of the 2010 Equinox has been the Ford Edge. As you can see from the leaked photos of the new Equinox, it is larger in size (probably quite close to the Edge). This Equinox will be built on GM's Theta II platform, which is different than the current Saturn Vue, which is a blended platform of Theta I and Theta II. We can only hope that the new Equinox and it's GMC brother the Terrain are not pigs like the Vue.

As of a few weeks ago the Ingresoll, Ontario assembly plant was already performing pilot builds of the 2010 Equinox and Terrain. At the current time production for both vehicles will begin in March-April 2009, with them on dealership lots by May. That leads us to believe that the Equinox and Terrain have been pushed up a bit, as the initial launch date use to be Fall 2009.

GMC Terrain + 30 MPG + MSRP around $23,000 = my Envoy replacement.

Will these new crossovers still be two row seating?

As far as we know, yes. There was talk of an optional third row a couple years ago, but I haven't heard anymore about that since.

Meh. Well, we work just as well with the two row seating in the Envoy. Plus, part of the reason my parents went with the Envoy over the Yukon was because they didn't like the lack of cargo room behind the third row.
I really hope these new crossovers do well...they look pretty good from what we've seen. 28-30 MPG would just make the deal even sweeter.

Awesome News!!!

The Japanese are eating our lunch and GM brilliantly targets the FORD EDGE!
Do the dinosaurs at the Ren Center think its the 50's?

Consumers are looking for smaller and more fuel efficient choices and GM produces a larger Equinox!

Just because the new Vue is overweight and GM has a bunch of fatties in the lineup is no reason to think the Equinox won't be a featherweight... although does anyone know any reason to think differently????

Re: 2010 Equinox: Chevrolet's New Edge?

A FWD Vue with the HF V-6 gets 17/24 mpg. If the new Equinox is the size of the Edge, it will be a lot bigger than the current Vue.

In the context of the CTS, when the HF V-6 gets direct injection, its mileage goes down.

Maybe the 4 cylinder Equinox will get "27 to 30" highway. I don't see how an Equinox with a 3.6L V-6 will get much better than the current Vue. But here are a few suggestions:

1. You do not need to improve torsional rigidity by 500% every other year.

2. 22" wheels look stupid and weigh a lot.

3. People who buy Equinoxes don't actually go "four wheeling".

Take those tips into consideration, and you can make a CUV that is not a pig.

Re: 2010 Equinox: Chevrolet's New Edge?

There not going to be able to knock down the Edge that easily. For the MY2010 gets a facelift, in MY2011 it gets a Hybrid and the 2.5 EB, in 2012 The HySeries will come out which is there plug-in Hybrid.

I sure hope they will be 2 rows only. GM has to get the weight down by at least 500 over the lard-ass Vue.

Re: 2010 Equinox: Chevrolet's New Edge?

Edge is the best selling cross over...its a good target.

And from what I see, DI not only adds power, but maintains or gains gas milage.

The Nox looks good. Has the new Chevy styling, and it matches the Traverse and also looks like a softer Tahoe/Burb. 4 cyl engine coming to the Nox is a good idea too. Nox looks bigger, but the current Nox is a big SUV. I look for 100-150lbs gained over last gen.

Re: 2010 Equinox: Chevrolet's New Edge?

Let's hope they don't offer the NSAP Reliability Package standard on this Equinox.

If the fuel economy is impressive with the 4-cyl., then that will be great. But there are many examples out there now in the automotive world of 4-cyl. crossovers and SUVs that don't get much better fuel economy than V6's, and the few wagons that are out there still trounce the bloated, cladded wagons on stilts that are "CUVs" in the fuel efficiency and handling categories.

All that said, I would have been in the market for an Equinox or Torrent years ago if a moderately techy and fuel efficent 4-banger had been an option from day one. Instead we got a "value" V6 from China with questionable value.

Better late than never.

GM's targets should always be customer needs and desires, never another vehicle. When a company focuses on its competition rather than the customer, it misses the mark.

Th edge was the top selling V6 crossover last year. You target the sales leaders. The Vue is more the size of the CR-V and Rav4. GM needs a competent 5 passenger crossover and the Equinox should be that.

Because Chevrolet needs two 7 passenger CUVs. Losing the third row, three inches and a few hundred pounds is out of the question.

Re: 2010 Equinox: Chevrolet's New Edge?

why would a 3.0l produce 270hp but the 3.6 only put out 280? kind of redundant if that were true
