careful what you spend your car is not worth much now as a 7 year old Impala, and spending big $$ on some upgrades wont improve the value...youll just be out more money when it comes time to trade it.

On that note, I would look and I know you said you did not want to...look for a wrecked SS 03-04 Impala, and steal the engine, sometimes that is cheaper then messing around with a bunch of mods that never seem to work right together.

That 3.4L makes like 170 hp. I'd have a fighting chance at beating you with my Explorer

Hate to say it, but if you want some performance, you need to get out of that engine. 3800 Series II supercharger (L67), 3900, even a 3500 would be quite a bit better than what you have now.

Even a non-sueprcharged 3800 would be better. At least you can mod them

Re: I need help with a 2000 impala 3.4

^^^ Yep.

For the money you'd have to spend to make a significant improvement, you could also buy a cheap Mustang/F-Body/etc. that would probably still be faster in stock form, and would be far more easily upgradable.

Heck, if you like Impalas, I've seen police cars go for $1000 at auctions. Sure most of them have had a lot of hard miles, but on the other hand you'd have the 3800, heavy-duty drivetrain & cooling system, and not much weight since they don't have any luxury features. It's probably the closest thing to a "raceable" Impala of that vintage.

no joke, I drove one a few weeks back when my GF got one on loan when the dealership was working on her SS, it was a total DOG (no offence banallweakness, I'm sure your Impala is a nice car) but I think both my 6000lbs dually 4x4 Ram & my little 4cyl Ranger are faster, my GF couldnt wait to get her SS back! I would find a L67 car, if you are into the Impala's, becuse the 3.4 isnt worth spending money on. IMO

Even an L36 non-supercharged 3800 will offer a lot more than the 3400, and still can be modded, but you'd be best off with a supercharged 3800 and be done with it

Re: I need help with a 2000 impala 3.4

No replacement for displacement

The 3.4 is a decent little engine but not well suited to go fast in a 3500 lb. car, it's still only around 200 cubes.

I'd enjoy the car for what it is, a really nice ride with good fuel economy and comfort. Put a set of wheels on it, window tint, upgrade the stereo, and cruise.

I remember we test droive one in 2000 base model 3400 v6. At the time it was a much more powerful choice than a 4-cyl camry, but not so much grunt compared to modern v6 sedan expectations.

Re: I need help with a 2000 impala 3.4

Hi

If the 3400 has the same U-bend for the secondary O2 sensor as the L36 3800, than you can cut the pipe and install a straight pipe with a bung for the sensor. That should yield about 5 hp.

Not many performance options for the 3400, but I would do a UOA just to make sure she isnt leaking internally.

www.NAIOA.com
Cold air intake and U-bend delete will give you a little more grunt.

You wont get enough power out of it to justify the cost. It would be cheaper to trade it for a stock GTP.
